Bypass YouTube adblock detection

Too often, an ad interrupts users in the middle of a YouTube video to disrupt their attention. This resulted in viewers relying on ad blockers for a seamless YouTube experience. However, the platform’s harsh policies entered a different level recently. Now, more and more users receive warning messages telling them to disable ad blockers if they wish to keep watching videos.

Recent updates made slipping through YouTube’s detection difficult for avid fans. But, of course, very few are willing to trade their ad blockers for an ad-riddled viewing or a pricey YouTube Premium subscription. Fortunately, if you’re wondering how to bypass YouTube adblock detection, I am here to help.

Therefore, I’ve compiled a handy list of 7 methods to help you easily bypass YouTube’s adblock detection. How does adblock detection work on YouTube?

Websites like YouTube deploy smart anti-blocking scripts to spot your ad blocker. They can halt your access to content, demanding you to disable ad-blocking software and allow YouTube ads. Let’s be honest: in my experience, navigating the web or watching videos without my trusty ad blocker can quickly become a daunting business. My minutes get stolen, and my attention strays with every pre-roll that YouTube throws my way.

YouTube adblock detection message

Ad blockers work their tricks through responses to filter lists filled with the addresses of ad servers. They can then scan website elements to determine which ones have commercials and should be cast into the shadows. This process of ad-blocking detection, however, involves a clever ploy, including what I am referring to as baiting.

This bait is invisible to the user, skillfully designed to resemble commercial content that ad blockers typically hunt. When a website wraps up loading, the algorithm detects your ad-blocking extension or app and activates an anti-blocking script. Consequently, the web page freezes or throws an obtrusive pop-up, straight up telling you to disable the ad blocker or you shall not pass. That’s how YouTube’s adblock detection has people in its grip.

Why would I want to bypass YouTube adblock detection?

YouTube used to be a hub of a diverse assortment of free videos without advertisements. Today, it’s a blessing if only one ad interrupts my video. The free content has begun to cost me my time, attention, and even interest. Consequently, other people have turned to ad blockers for more reasons than just a seamless viewing experience on YouTube:

  • Retaining privacy. Trackers lurk in online ads, ready to collect data about you and how you behave online. In short, they help marketing companies tailor targeted ads for you. However, it feels quite Orwellian to me that digital eyes always watch my back as I navigate YouTube or any other website. An ad blocker, meanwhile, helps me disable trackers.
  • Malware protection. Some ads on YouTube carry malicious code or URLs that direct you to unsafe domains. I suggest using a premium ad blocker that helps you avoid interaction with suspicious advertising corners by blocking them.
  • Saving mobile data & battery. Ads feed on resources, which is felt even more on mobile devices. Hence, an ad blocker saves battery life and data usage to an extent.
  • Faster website loading time. Ads, especially rich media ads on YouTube, can significantly slow down web page loading times. Ad blockers reduce the time through ad removal, providing a faster and more efficient browsing experience.

2. Enable Reading Mode

This trick works on browsers other than Chrome. You can check whether your browser has a Reading Mode. Initially, this nifty feature was exclusive to Safari. Still, times have changed, and I was able to find it in most popular browsers.

Reading mode on Chrome

Reading Mode is handy because it prevents the website's JavaScript from running when the page loads. But it doesn't stop there; it also ensures a clutter-free user interface, focusing solely on the essentials: images, text, and videos. And if your browser doesn't support reading mode, you can resort to extensions like Just Read that can pull off the same neat trick.

Here’s how to enable Reading Mode:

  1. In the Chrome address bar, type chrome://flags and tap Enter
  2. Look up reading mode on Google Search
  3. In the Reading Mode, click the drop-down and toggle Enabled
  4. Restart Chrome

3. Switch to Incognito Mode

While this YouTube adblock detection bypass method isn’t foolproof, it’s certainly worth a shot. You’ll find it under different names depending on your browser – some call it private mode, while others are Incognito. But let’s leave the naming to linguistics. Meanwhile, I shall explain how to use an ad blocker in this mode.

Incognito mode

It typically works well with browsers like Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. Keep in mind that this method may only work on some websites. This is because Incognito mode disables various tracking features like cache and cookies, which are precisely what some sites use to detect your ad blocker. So, while it’s a handy trick, its success may vary from site to site.

Here’s how to enable Incognito Mode:

  1. Open Chrome, Firefox or any other browser
  2. Click on the three vertical dots on the top right corner of the browser
  3. Drag your cursor over More Tools and select Extensions
  4. Click More Details on the ad blocker extension
  5. Toggle the Allow in Incognito switch
  6. Open a new private window
  7. Turn your browser on and off and now you’re good

4. Disable JavaScript

One of the most effective ways to bypass YouTube adblock detection is to disable JavaScript. However, it may mess up the website interface and some features as the sacrificial cost of that ad-free YouTubing.

Disable JavaScript on Chrome

Disable JavaScript on Chrome:

  1. Copy the URL of YouTube or another website that detected your ad blocker
  2. Hover over the three dots in the upper right corner of Chrome
  3. Click Settings
  4. Select Privacy and security, then head to Site settings
  5. Click on JavaScript
  6. Under the Not allowed to use JavaScript category, add the link you copied
  7. Refresh YouTube or other website you disabled JavaScript on

Disable JavaScript on Firefox:

  1. Enter about:config into the address bar in Firefox
  2. Select the Accept the Risk and Continue button
  3. Enter javascript.enabled into the search box at the top of the page
  4. Toggle javascript.enabled to change its value to false.
  5. JavaScript is now disabled in your Firefox browser, so just refresh the browser

Or you can disable JavaScript browser extension. Add JavaScript extension to Firefox, and from there you can enable and disable it easily.

Disable JavaScript on Brave:

  1. Click the hamburger (three-line) menu in the upper right corner
  2. Click on Settings
  3. Choose Security and Privacy on the left-side menu.
  4. Head to Site and Shield Settings
  5. Scroll down to the Content section and click JavaScript
  6. Choose the option Don't allow sites to use Javascript
  7. Refresh Brave and now you should be able to bypass YouTube adblock detection

Disable JavaScript on Opera:

  1. From the menu bar choose Preferences on your Opera browser
  2. When the Settings section opens in a new tab, click on Advanced from the left menu bar
  3. Click on Site Settings
  4. Choose JavaScript
  5. Toggle the Allowed switch to block JavaScript
  6. Below specify the allowed or blocked websites
  7. Refresh Opera browser

Disable JavaScript on Edge:

  1. On Microsoft Edge window click the three-dot icon in the top right
  2. Select Settings
  3. Tap Cookies and Site Permissions
  4. Switch JavaScriptDisable to block JavaScript on all websites.
  5. Or list the specific pages you want to block JavaScript on, like YouTube
  6. Restart Microsoft Edge

5. Install a user script manager

No doubt, the list of browser extensions at your disposal is quite extensive. Among them, I found handy tools like Tampermonkey for Chromium-based browsers and Greasemonkey for Firefox. The ability to seamlessly bypass adblock detection without messing up a website's layout or functionality singles these extensions out as top-notch solutions.

Tampermonkey user script manager

I found this method reliable as it helped bypass YouTube adblock detection several times. By the way, these extensions are otherwise known as user script managers. Here's a friendly tip: I don't always recommend adding browser extensions for every little thing. It's wise to consider this method for slips through adblock detection only if all else fails.

6. Enable Distill Page feature on Chrome

Chrome offers its feature, Distill Page, which keeps my ad blocker running without any breaks. Conveniently, I didn’t need to download or install anything since it’s already incorporated in the browser. In a nutshell, the Distill Page feature refines your ad blocker, leaving only essential code. That way, it easily dodges YouTube adblock detection, although it may cause a distorted web page layout.

Chrome distill page

Here’s how to enable Chrome’s Distill Page:

  1. Head to chrome://flags/#enable-reader-mode
  2. Toggle the switch on for Enable Reader Mode
  3. Click Distill page from the three-dot menu if an ad blocker is detected on YouTube or any other website

7. Inspect Element + CSS Trick

I warn immediately that this method is advanced and typically used by tech-inclined folks. Right-click on YouTube, then click Inspect – it opens the innards of a code. The Inspect Element feature allows you to tweak the CSS properties of the troublesome code blocking your content or detecting the ad blocker.

Inspect enabled on Chrome

However, meddling with content-blocking code varies from website to website, so what works on YouTube may work differently on Spotify. So, you’ll need some technical know-how to identify and manually remove the HTML blocks.

That’s precisely why this method isn’t a walk in the park and is generally recommended for folks with at least some basic knowledge of HTML and CSS. Also, note that your tinkering disappears after refreshing the page, so you need to do it repeatedly if you're wondering how to bypass YouTube adblock detection with CSS.

Say no to ads with the #1 adblock

Popular websites, especially those with a heavy reliance on advertising revenue, have become increasingly skilled at detecting and countering ad blockers. It’s not just YouTube, sadly. However, the methods I introduced above also work on other web pages and allow you to bypass adblock detection with maximum stealth.

Let’s quickly revise them:

  1. Using an undetectable adblocker
  2. Enabling Reading Mode
  3. Switching to Incognito Mode
  4. Disabling JavaScript
  5. Installing a user script manager
  6. Enable Chrome’s Distill Page feature
  7. Inspect Element + CSS Trick

But one more trick up my sleeve may work on other websites better than on YouTube. I tested viewing cached pages as a way to avoid adblock detection. And it works quite often, though the content on such a version of a page might not be up to date. Basically, the cached copies of almost any website is available with Google Cache and Wayback Machine.

Google Cache

You don’t need any additional extensions of software, but it only works on Chrome. Once you search for something on Google, click on the three dots beside the URL of the web page you wish to view. Then, click on Cached to view the older version of the website and bypass adblock detection.

Cached websites on Google

Wayback Machine

The Wayback Machine is an internet archive that preserves various snapshots of web pages captured at different dates and times. It's important to note that not every webpage may have been archived in this collection.

Wrapping up

Navigating the web space with an ad blocker is a game-changer for every cybernaut, offering a smooth and private browsing experience. However, it can be incredibly frustrating and potentially risky when YouTube and other websites detect your ad blocker and demand you to disable it. But here’s the good news – when your screen freezes and that pesky pop-up instructs you to disable your ad blocker, you’re not out of options.

YouTube adblock detection leaves your sight when you rely on hard-to-detect ad blockers, disable JavaScript, browse in Incognito Mode, or use a user script manager. Though none work 100%, they’re the best you can do to fight for that ad-free YouTube viewing. If you’re uncertain about which ad blocker to rely on, I’d like to suggest Total Adblock. It’s a trustworthy solution that excels at multiple tasks like eradicating pesky pop-ups and trackers.

How I get around adblock detection on Android?

Are there any other ways to block ads?

There are several ways to block ads. The most straightforward and effective way is to install an ad blocker extension or app on your device. My experts recommend using Total Adblock as the first-rate solution against adware, including trackers that monitor your behavior for targeted ads.

How do websites know I'm using an adblock?

There are several reasons why a website may accuse you of using an ad-blocker even if you have whitelisted it or simply don't. The most common is browser extension conflict. it's possible that you have multiple ad-blocking extensions installed in your browser. Check the extension list carefully.

Is disabling ad blockers safe?

Yes, disabling ad blockers is safe. However, it's alright only as long as you don’t interact with scammy and malicious ads on the website. Been watching YouTube, instead of TV, for as long as I can remember.

I Like almost every single video I watch, as it seems a simple way to thank the uploader for their time and effort, I also subscribe to probably way too many creators.

But to greedy Google, and its continued desire for world domination, this now means that isn’t enough, and they want their slice of my wages through what is tantamount to a stealth tax. Sorry, but F*CK YOU Google, I shall do ALL I humanly can to avoid giving you a single bean you filthy beasts!!!

Great article, thank you so VERY much for sharing, Julie.
