Best VPN for Uruguay in 2024

In addition to the reasons why you’d use a VPN anywhere else around the world (protection, anonymity, and remote access to geo-blocked content), users in Uruguay are subject to a telecom monopoly and have no choice but to buy their web service from the only game in town – ANTEL.

In order to keep the state-owned ISP from monitoring or collecting your personal data, we’ve compiled a list of services starting with the best VPN for Uruguay.

Our VPN ranking system

Before we proceed, let’s look at the criteria we’ll be using to evaluate these VPN providers:

  1. VPN security
  2. Performance
  3. Entertainment (effectiveness against geo-blocking, torrenting capabilities)
  4. Reliability against firewalls and censorship
  5. Ease of use and customer support
  6. Price

With that said, here are our top candidates for the best VPN for Uruguay.

No time to read? Here are our best VPNs:

1. NordVPN

  • Unbeatable in terms of security and privacy
  • NordLynx protocol for the best speeds without sacrificing security
  • SmartPlay to access the geo-blocked content
  • No router app

NordVPN is consistently ranked among the best VPN providers worldwide. With a strong basis to guarantee their customers’ security, Nord’s developers have included a host of privacy-oriented features in their product, such as CyberSec, obfuscated servers, and the Double VPN feature.

Operating from within a jurisdiction that does not have any data retention laws greatly aids their credibility when they claim a zero-log policy. NordVPN boasts an impressive number of worldwide servers, currently just over 5200 and counting, and offers good speeds regardless of where you travel.

If this wasn’t enough, Nord’s affordable subscription ensures you’re getting premium cybersecurity for a bargain. This choice is an obvious one.

2. PrivateVPN

38 Mbps
  • Security and privacy-friendly
  • Industry standard speeds
  • Excellent for streaming
  • Lackluster customer support

PrivateVPN is on the lower end of worldwide servers, with just 100 units spanning almost 60 countries. This will show in the connection speed you’ll get through their app, which is often average. Still, the speeds are decent enough to stream anything on Netflix.

One aspect that PrivateVPN is particularly good for is peer-to-peer file transfers and torrenting, for which they recommend their Swedish servers. Their location, on the other hand, is not exactly the best for these activities, as Sweden is part of the Fourteen Eyes. Their great price somewhat balances their location, as well as their overall lack of worldwide servers, depending on your specific needs.

3. VyprVPN

Download speed:
357 Mbps
  • Very secure
  • Independently audited no-log policy
  • Great performance
  • No anonymous payments

Despite the fact that VyprVPN does not appear on top VPN lists as much as other names here, they are quite straightforward about what their software will and won’t do. They guarantee great security for your Internet traffic, while also being registered in a privacy-friendly country.

Their no-log policy was independently verified by PricewaterhouseCoopers, and there’s no geo-blocked content you can’t get to with them. Although they don’t have the most servers, they own each and every one of the servers they use. Overall, they offer above industry-standard performance, while also having an affordable subscription.

They’re not the best choice for torrenting, which their developers disagree with, but we highly recommend VyprVPN for your online privacy and security needs.

4. Astrill VPN

  • Admirable security and privacy
  • Lightning speeds
  • Excellent for torrenting
  • No money-back guarantee

Astrill VPN has the upper hand of being one of the fastest VPNs currently on the market. They deliver on anonymity, as well as on customer support, unblocking geo-restricted content, and streaming Netflix while traveling. There’s few, if any, negatives that we have found with Astrill VPN aside from their slightly expensive subscription.

A particular feature that is mentioned in their privacy policy is the fact that they do keep track of details such as the amount of traffic you use, how much time you spend on your connection, or your IP address. We don’t find anything particularly wrong with this, so Astrill VPN is a definite first spot candidate.

5. ExpressVPN

Download speed:
440 Mbps
  • Excellent security and privacy
  • Consistently high performance
  • Perfect for streaming, gaming, and torrenting
  • Very expensive

The developers of ExpressVPN are located outside any data retention laws, and, although they have only 2,000 servers worldwide, these consistently outperform average VPN servers. We couldn’t really find any negatives to their service, except for the fact that they do not have a free trial, whereas their subscription is a bit on the expensive side.

Their no-logs policy was inadvertently tested when Turkish authorities forcibly seized one of their servers in 2017 with the hope of getting some information on an ExpressVPN user but turned out empty-handed. Without a doubt, these are the makings of a pole position contender.

Is it safe to use a VPN in Uruguay?

Local Internet access in Uruguay is provided by the state-owned telecom organization ANTEL. The company is the only ISP in Uruguay, which means they effectively hold a monopoly on the local telecom and data industry.

ANTEL has behaved aggressively in repeated instances in order to maintain this privileged status, staving off fledgling businesses that offered better prices and qualitatively superior services. More worrisome is the fact that the state has secretly acquired surveillance software (dubbed The Guardian) specialized in monitoring citizen communications back in 2013. That said, using VPNs in Uruguay is not illegal, which does make them safe to purchase and use.

If you’re in Uruguay, which of these VPNs have you used before? Did we miss any great VPNs for Uruguay? Let us know in the comments below.

Do you know anything further about VpyrVPN? I have never heard of it til now, and I’ve heard of all these others. I’m travelling there soon and I’m super tempted to just go with one of the big names, but if that one’s better somehow for the country specifically, I’d be interested to know.

I use VyprVPN and it’s great to use on multiple devices, saves you a ton of money if you’re using one account for the entire family. Is compatible with different browsers too which is a major plus. Speed and performance wise, it’s great!

The monopoly on web services is infuriating. Most people here in Uruguay don’t seem to care, but not having the power to choose really bothers me. I got a VPN a year ago and I advise everyone here to do the same.

VyprVPN is definitely a good choice when it comes to choosing a VPN in Uruguay. It allows you to generate an IP address that originates from any of their global VPN servers.

Uruguay tends to be a very easy-going and safe country. This also applies to its internet laws, but many people may still want to get a VPN. NordVPN, as mentioned in your article, is a great choice.

In Uruguay, we are bound to buy web services from the only telecom provider in the country. They also track the activities and collect personal details of internet users. Interestingly, I have better knowledge of how to get the best VPN to secure my privacy.

Thanks for your opinion!
