NordVPN announces NordLocker: a brand new file encryption service
It seems that one of our favorite VPN services has decided to bring its well-deserved cybersecurity accolades into the file encryption business as well.
Yesterday, NordVPN unveiled its plans to launch NordLocker – a brand new file encryption tool currently in development. Set to be released this summer, NordLocker promises to go beyond merely encrypting files by also letting users securely manage access permissions with a user-friendly app available for Mac and Windows.
“By releasing NordLocker, we want to make top-notch data security available for everyone – regardless of their tech skills. To achieve this, we combine the best usability practices with the highest encryption standards”, says Marty P. Kamden, CMO at NordVPN.
According to NordVPN’s blog post, businesses and individuals will be able to encrypt and store sensitive files both on their devices and on a cloud service of their choice.
“We expect that NordLocker will be popular both for personal use and for work-related cases, especially for those who work in multicultural environments – startups, freelancers, and digital nomads”, Kamden added.
Unbeatable security?
By “highest encryption standards,” Mr. Kamden means that NordLocker will be using the AES-256 encryption protocol with a 4096-bit RSA handshake. In other words, unbreakable. So far, so good.
According to the press release, “the new tool will have NordVPN’s own zero-knowledge encryption process to ensure ultimate security.” Well, encryption doesn’t get more secure than that.
Another interesting fact about the upcoming service – users won’t have to juggle between different apps and providers to safely transfer their files. Instead, NordLocker will integrate its functionality will “all” current cloud storage providers. Which means we’ll be able to simply encrypt the files before uploading them to the cloud.
All things considered, we certainly like what we’re seeing at the moment, so color us positively intrigued. And if NordLocker turns out to be just as secure and user-friendly as NordVPN, the app’s popularity is certain to skyrocket.
An early sneak peek
Will the new encryption tool end up being the top-notch product a Nord is VPN? Time will tell. If you’re not the waiting type, though, you can try NordLocker for yourself. Although it’s currently undergoing internal stress-tests, people can sign up for early access right now. We certainly will.
Stay tuned for our early NordLocker impressions if we get the lucky number.
