NordVPN announces the NordPass password manager
From the makers of the top-rated NordVPN comes a new product that should help protect your personal data by remembering the important things for you. We’re talking about NordPass – a password manager that’ll be entering an already crowded market at a yet-to-be-announced date.
This news comes less than a month after a file encryption service called NordLocker had been announced.
What’s the use of a password manager anyway?
Everyone has more and more accounts online that require a username and password to log in. While the username part has become more simple, often matching an email address, the situation with passwords is getting more complicated. Long gone are the days when the only requirement for a password was a length of 8 or even 6 symbols.
The industry’s been pushing users to create more difficult-to-hack passwords that have also become difficult to remember. That’s leading everyone to using the same password for multiple accounts, which also was easy to remember and often saved somewhere not safe, such as on a sticky note.
But now the industry has a solution for this issue in the form of a password manager which remembers and keeps your passwords secure.
NordPass security features
It’s still too early to talk about the features that NordPass will have – there’s no release date announced yet. But what we know so far is that NordPass will use a system of one master password that unlocks all the others for you.
Your passwords will be securely hidden under AES-256-GCM encryption with Argon2 for key derivation.
What’s more, NordPass uses zero-knowledge encryption. It means that only the user will get to see their passwords. No one, not even the people behind NordPass, will be able to decrypt your data without the right key.
Also, you won’t need to generate those secure passwords full of numbers and strange symbols anymore – NordPass will do all the dirty work. And finally – NordPass is registered in Panama, just like NordVPN, which means no data retention laws and no prying eyes.
How does NordPass work?
The convenience of using NordPass password manager lies in its ability to autocomplete the login forms for you. This means that as soon as you log in to NordPass with your master password, you no longer need to fill in any details to access all your accounts. What’s more, NordPass will work from virtually anywhere – it’s not connected to any particular device.
Chances are you already have a list of passwords stored somewhere that you often use. Importing them to NordPass won’t be a problem – you can transfer the data from web browsers, computer files, or even other password managers.
More often than not, we need to put down some important information which doesn’t necessarily come in the form of a password but should be kept secret nevertheless, such as the address of your gym trainer.
Luckily, NordPass offers the option to save all private notes securely upon request.
