How to unblock Spotify

How to unblock Spotify

Looking for the best way to unblock Spotify so that you can get back to streaming your favorite music on demand? Read on to find out.

Spotify is one of the best music streaming platforms. The streaming service lets you play music from a library of over 20 million tracks. However, not everybody is in a position to access all these tracks, and some people can’t even use the service due to geo-restrictions.

Spotify only operates in 65+ countries, and the music list you can play will also vary depending on your location.

To effectively unblock Spotify, you’ll need to use a VPN, or Virtual Private Network. We highly recommend one of the top VPNs in the world, NordVPN.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to get Spotify unblocked wherever it’s blocked, and how you can access music that is restricted in your area using a VPN.

Unblocking Spotify

Spotify is only licensed to play certain music in certain locations, and this is implemented through IP addresses. Your IP address caries information that shows your location, ISP, country, etc. To unblock Spotify, you need to change your IP address, and one of the most reliable ways to do that is through a VPN.

A VPN securely tunnels your traffic through a remote VPN server of your choice, and that server spoofs your real IP address and gives you a new one. The IP address you get belongs to the location of the server that you have chosen, and so you can just easily unblock Spotify by connecting to a region that is not restricted.

Generally, here are the steps you need to take to unblock Spotify:

  1. Register with a good VPN for Spotify (see our recommendations below)
  2. Download the VPN’s app for your device
  3. Log in and connect to a server in your desired location, e.g., the US
  4. Open Spotify and enjoy your music!

When you need to access music that’s not available in the region where you are connected, you just need to change your server location, and you’ll gain access.

Best VPNs for Spotify

Choosing your VPN carefully is as good knowing that you need one. Here are a few factors that you need to consider:

  • Many server locations
  • High VPN speeds
  • Solid privacy and security
  • Ability to unblock Spotify and other streaming services such as Netflix
  • Reliable and easy to use VPN apps

Here are the best VPNs that fit these factors:

1. Surfshark VPN

Surfshark VPN service logo

Surfshark VPN is a relatively new entrant in the VPN industry, but it’s already competing with the big names. It’s super-fast, and it works with Spotify, Netflix, and many other streaming services.

This VPN is based in the Netherlands and therefore is not required by law to keep any records. This is one of the reasons it can promise its users a zero-logs service.

SurfShark has a good number of appealing features. These include an automatic kill switch, multi-hop, split tunneling, zero-knowledge DNS, and clean web features (blocks ads, trackers & malware).

One major drawback is that Surfshark’s monthly plan is among the more pricey in this list. However, its yearly plan is also the cheapest on the list! Last but not least is a 30-day money-back guarantee that covers all plans.

2. NordVPN

NordVPN has exponentially improved its services over the last few years, and it’s now among the best in the market. Known for its excellent privacy and its many security features, Nord also boasts the most servers in the industry.

With a network of 7000+ servers in 118 countries, you can always get a reliable and fast connection with NordVPN. The servers are optimized to work with most streaming platforms, including Spotify, and you can even stream Netflix US using almost any server near you.

As for privacy, NordVPN is excellent. The VPN is based in Panama, and it doesn’t keep usage or connection logs, and the latter can’t be said for many VPNs. Security-wise, it uses AES 256-bit encryption and avails various protocols and very many privacy and security features and options.

The VPN has superb clients for almost any device, and you’ll get up to 6 simultaneous connections, 24/7 live chat support, and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

3. CyberGhost VPN

CyberGhost is a top VPN that has had many changes in the last year in a bid to make it one of the most popular VPN services. The VPN has more than tripled its servers within that time, released new client apps, and improved its general infrastructure.

CyberGhost is now one of the best VPNs for Spotify as well as most other streaming services. The VPN boasts a server network of 11700+ servers in 100 countries, and these servers are very well distributed all over the world.

It’s also good at both privacy and security. It’s based in Romania, a country that revoked its data retention laws way back in 2014. This VPN, therefore, manages to keep its promise of zero logs, and it also uses AES 256-bit encryption for security.

Dubbed CyberGhost 7, the VPN’s new clients are superb, and can be installed on almost any device. You’ll get an allowance of up to 7 simultaneous devices and a very generous 45-day money-back guarantee.

Final thoughts

Unblocking Spotify is quite easy if you have the right VPN. The VPNs listed above have all been tested, and they not only work with Spotify but also with all other major streaming services. With one of them, you won’t have to worry if Spotify is not available in your area or some of the music you want to stream is geo-restricted.

Wow, I didn’t know Spotify was also geo-restricted. I can’t believe it ! All streaming services are geo-restricted ??! Well I guess using a VPN isn’t really optional anymore, thanks for the article.

I didn’t know Spotify’s content was also geo-restricted, like Netflix’s! I should’ve guessed it. It’s a pity, but luckily VPNs exist and we can get past those restrictions!

Thanks for your opinion!
