How to beat Netflix VPN ban in 2024

Bypass Netflix VPN Ban

It’s no secret that Netflix offers different content libraries depending on your country. For VPN users, this shouldn’t be an issue – if the streaming platform didn’t block VPN traffic, that is. While Netflix’s VPN ban won’t terminate your account, it will prevent you from watching region-specific shows and movies.

In general, Netflix allows VPNs, but there are several necessary restrictions. If you're on an ad-supported plan, VPNs are off-limits – you'll need to either upgrade to an ad-free plan or disable your VPN while streaming. VPN usage is prohibited for live content, so you must connect directly to enjoy real-time programming.

Moreover, Netflix has strict policies against using VPNs to circumvent geographical restrictions. So, your viewing options could be significantly limited. However, you can use a reliable VPN to bypass restrictions.

The problem lies with subpar services, as they can be detected and blocked instantly. Because of this, you have to use reliable VPNs that work with Netflix. While connected to a VPN, it will appear as if you’re logging in to Netflix from a different region, allowing you to bypass geo-restrictions.

  2. Download the appropriate VPN app for your device and install it
  3. Log into your VPN account and connect to your desired server. Let’s say you want to browse UK Netflix, then pick a connection point in Britain.

  5. Go to Netflix and enjoy uninterrupted access to all the new content!

Understanding the Netflix VPN ban

Using a VPN to access Netflix is not illegal, but it does violate Netflix's terms of service. Netflix’s licensing agreements restrict content availability based on geographic regions, so using a VPN to bypass these restrictions is technically against the rules. Despite this, Netflix typically opts not to ban users for using VPNs, although it may limit the content you can access if it detects VPN usage.

As of January 2024, no subscriber has faced legal action for using a VPN to stream Netflix content. While the practice is legally permissible, Netflix's detection measures mean VPNs might not always work, and the platform is committed to enforcing its regional licensing agreements.

Netflix VPN ban

VPNs are ideally suited to this deception because they mask users’ original identities and create the illusion that users are based elsewhere.

While many Netflix users can still watch their usual shows and movies, geo-blocked titles often remain unavailable. Netflix explicitly states that when a VPN is detected, only content for which they have global rights (such as e.g., "Squid Game" or "Stranger Things") will be accessible. Therefore, even with a VPN, viewers may be unable to watch the region-specific content they hoped to access.

However, most users found that the issue was the VPN technology itself, with certain providers neglecting to prioritize their streaming platform unblocking capabilities. Hence, choose a provider focusing specifically on streaming for an uninterrupted and unrestricted Netflix experience.

Best Netflix VPNs in 2024

If your VPN isn't working with Netflix, it's probably because Netflix has blocked the IP address of your VPN server. To resolve this, you should use a streaming-optimized VPN. Alternatively, you can connect to a different server in the same country or clear your browser cookies and cache.

Based on my research, these are the best Netflix VPNs that reliably bypass restrictions without being detected:

  1. NordVPN – The best VPN for Netflix in 2024. The extensive server network grants access to various regional Netflix libraries across the globe. And the Smart Play feature allows bypassing geo-blocks on devices that don’t support VPN technology. Finally, the Meshnet feature circumvents password-sharing restrictions, letting you, your friends, and your family use the same Netflix account from anywhere.
  2. Surfshark – The top VPN for Netflix boasts high-speed streaming and an extensive server network spanning 100+ countries, providing access to the most comprehensive range of Netflix libraries. Broad device compatibility and unlimited connections are big bonuses, letting one stream on virtually everything they own. Smart DNS ensures they can do it even on streaming peripherals.
  3. PrivateVPN – Experience 4K-ready speeds on any server with a PrivateVPN that works with Netflix. With servers spanning all continents, you can effortlessly access Netflix libraries from the US, UK, Japan, and many more countries within a few clicks. Since the fleet spans all continents, a plethora of Netflix libraries have become readily available with just a few clicks.

How to bypass Netflix VPN block: a step-by-step guide

Netflix detects VPN usage through several methods:

  • It identifies DNS leaks, where inconsistencies between IP addresses and DNS settings can reveal VPN use.
  • High volumes of traffic from specific IP addresses also trigger detection.
  • Additionally, Netflix cross-references location information from cookies with IP addresses to identify VPN users.

These methods allow Netflix to control regional content access based on users' actual locations. However, the ways Netflix detects VPN usage aren’t foolproof. Sometimes, they make mistakes and punish entirely blameless subscribers. If you are one of the unlucky ones caught in the VPN ban, there are several steps you can take to bypass it.

1. Choose a VPN that works for bypassing Netflix geo-restrictions

Not all VPNs can access Netflix outside of the user’s jurisdiction. Since Netflix's blocking VPN was exposed, many previously popular VPNs have struggled to adjust.

A dedicated IP is the best way to circumvent Netflix's VPN block. Look for a VPN service that offers dedicated IPs specifically for streaming. Additionally, examine their server list. While many quality VPNs provide extensive global coverage, prioritize servers strategically located to access the content libraries you desire, such as Hulu, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video, and more.

Most good VPNs have a broad geographic reach, but some are relatively limited. So if you intend to watch, for example, German or French Netflix, ensure plenty of servers in those countries.

NordVPN is widely regarded as the top Netflix VPN due to its exceptional ability to unlock region-restricted content, high-speed internet connections, and extensive server network. It effortlessly bypasses Netflix VPN restrictions, ensuring a seamless streaming experience.

2. Start a free trial or purchase a VPN subscription

You don’t have to commit to a single service straight away, as many premium VPNs have the option to test them first. Alternatively, most providers are insured with a 30-day money-back guarantee, allowing you to try out the VPN utterly risk-free for a month.

NordVPN pricing

Netflix constantly tries to strengthen its blockers, and you can suddenly find your Netflix VPN not working. So, shorter-term contracts are often recommended. It’s worth noting that the best VPNs for streaming, for example, NordVPN and Surfshark, have been working reliably with Netflix for years. Therefore, they are solid choices for long-term streaming.

3. Select a server in the country whose Netflix library you want to unblock

When using a VPN to access Netflix, select a server in the country whose Netflix library you want to access. Ensure your VPN client doesn't automatically optimize for speed, as the fastest server may not be in the desired location for accessing international Netflix content. Once connected to the appropriate server, open the Netflix app or website and begin streaming content from the unlocked library.

netflix stranger things title page with nordvpn interface

If the server fails, don’t panic. Switch to another one in the same country, and you should be able to continue watching TV and movies.

4. Consider using a dedicated IP

If a standard VPN doesn't allow access to Netflix, try switching to a different IP address or VPN server. Consider using a dedicated IP address if this doesn't resolve the issue. Unlike shared IPs, a dedicated IP is exclusively assigned to you, making it less likely to be detected and blocked by Netflix. It can help ensure uninterrupted access to Netflix's content libraries across regions. For this specific purpose, I recommend using one of the best Netflix VPNs on the market—NordVPN or Surfshark.

Dedicated IP option

Keep in mind that, a shared IP address can get overloaded and end up in the hands of people with different intentions. It makes the IP more prone to issues like being blacklisted and blocked because of what other users sharing the same address have been up to.

With a dedicated IP address, you’ll find it a breeze to reach services, websites, or applications that demand a steady IP address. Having your dedicated IP delivers more reliable consistency, whether it’s online banking, cryptocurrency trading, gambling, or other online websites.

Best Netflix VPNs to access the international library and avoid VPN blocking

To resolve VPN-related issues with Netflix, try switching servers, clearing cookies and cache, or using a different browser. If these steps fail, consider changing your VPN provider. Unfortunately, not all VPN services effectively bypass Netflix's detection systems. Therefore, I evaluated 20+ VPNs based on their geo-block circumvention, server network size, performance, and compatibility with various streaming devices.

After multiple VPNs, I discovered that NordVPN, Surfshark, and PrivateVPN are the most effective at bypassing Netflix's geo-blocks and unlocking content from other countries. Read on to delve deeper into their features!

Does using a VPN slow down Netflix streaming?

A provider with limited server locations or overcrowded servers may experience slower streaming performance or connection issues when accessing Netflix. That's because the VPN's capacity to efficiently handle the demands of streaming Netflix content becomes constrained, resulting in decreased speed and potential buffering interruptions.

However, the fastest VPN providers use efficient tunneling protocols and the latest server technology to guarantee ridiculously high connectivity speeds. Therefore, you won’t even notice that a VPN is on when streaming in UHD.

Why is Netflix not the same in every country?

Netflix content libraries differ depending on the country due to diverse intellectual property and media content regulations. This means the platform's selection of TV shows and movies varies depending on your location. For example, the USA library is extensive, boasting around 6000 titles. However, due to licensing agreements and copyright laws, Netflix cannot offer all its American content globally. Thus, if you travel to another country, you may find that the familiar content from the USA is unavailable.

harry potter not available in your country on netflix

Netflix explains this diversity simply: each country has its copyright laws, and content rights holders negotiate deals separately for each region. Sometimes, exclusive rights are granted to other companies, preventing Netflix from streaming specific series despite listing them in the general directory. Additionally, viewership preferences vary between countries, influencing which shows Netflix carries globally.

To manage these differences, Netflix employs "geoblocking" technology, which detects users' locations and delivers appropriate content mixes. Overcoming these geoblocks allows users to access Netflix's full range of shows across regions. In other cases, shows might be profitable in one country but less popular in another. As each show costs money for Netflix to stream on its platform, Netflix may not carry certain shows everywhere causing problems for dedicated fans.

In any case, the range of shows available to Netflix users is policed by a “geoblockers” system, which detects where users are based and delivers the right mix of content. You work around these issues to access the entire Netflix show repertoire.

Netflix shows exclusive to certain countries

Using a VPN for specific countries can unlock some of the most coveted movies and TV shows on Netflix. Here are just a few examples.

🗺️ Country 🎬 Show or movie 🎭 Genre 🍿 Netflix exclusive regions
UK Eric: Limited Series Drama UK
Turkey Kübra (SE02) Drama Turkey
Japan Antihero Thriller Japan
France Raising Voices Drama France, Argentina, Switzerland
South Korea The 8th Show: Limited Series Mystery South Korea
Australia Baby Reindeer Documentary Australia
USA Hit Man Comedy, Action Canada, UK
Canada Under Paris Horror, Action US, UK
Slovakia Geek Girl Comedy Slovakia

Naturally, these shows and movies aren’t exclusive to the countries mentioned above. For example, Rick and Morty is also available in other regions, but unavailable in the US.

Can a VPN help beat Netflix ISP throttling?

Yes, a good VPN will make it impossible for ISPs to monitor and throttle your streams by hiding your data and anonymizing your identity. However, the issue is real and prevalent.

Data throttling is a much-discussed but often-denied phenomenon when Internet Service Providers limit the speeds of particular users, especially those who use relatively high amounts of data. ISPs aren’t supposed to throttle anyone, but the evidence strongly suggests that they do. Netflix is one of the data-hungry sites that appears to prompt ISPs to limit user speeds.

Although not all ISPs function this way, significant enough names like Verizon and Comcast have been implicated in data throttling. Thankfully, the best Netflix VPNs, such as NordVPN or Surfshark, offer a simple solution for compromised streaming speeds.

Bottom line

You should have a good idea of how to get around Netflix VPN block techniques by now. Fundamentally, it’s pretty simple. Just find a VPN service that you can rely on to maintain its servers and software so that it stays a step ahead of Netflix.

Although that sounds simple, getting stuck with a VPN contract that doesn’t provide Netflix access is easy. That’s why you should choose your VPN service wisely and ensure it has a good track record of unblocking popular streaming services.

My top recommendation for Netflix is NordVPN. It’s fast, and reliable, has an extensive server network, and supports almost any streaming peripheral, thanks to SmartPlay. Moreover, you can even bypass Netflix’s password-sharing restrictions with the help of its unique feature called Meshnet.

FAQ

Does Netflix ban VPN users?

No, Netflix does not ban users who use a VPN. However, you won’t be able to watch anything if Netflix detects that you’re using a VPN.

Why is Netflix blocking VPN services?

Netflix blocks VPNs because they allow viewers to bypass geo-blocks. And these geographical restrictions are put in place because the platform needs to adhere to strict licensing agreements. The deals in question limit which countries get which shows and movies.

How do I stop Netflix from blocking my VPNs?

The best way to avoid Netflix VPN blocking is to use a dedicated IP. That way, no one else will use your IP address, meaning it’s less likely to be discovered and blocked. NordVPN, the best VPN for streaming, offers a dedicated IP option.

How can I unblock Netflix?

You can unblock Netflix with a premium VPN service by changing your IP address to appear as if you are in a different region. Free VPNs don’t support streaming, so you need a robust VPN to enjoy UHD Netflix sessions from anywhere. For example, NordVPN offers stellar performance, supports major devices, and unlocks most global Netflix libraries.

Why does my VPN not work on Netflix?

If your VPN isn't working with Netflix, it might be because the streaming service has banned your IP address. Hence, ensure you are using a streaming-optimized VPN. Otherwise, switch to different servers, clear your browser cache, reset your network connection, flush your DNS cache, or ultimately, talk to VPN customer support.

Why is NordVPN not working with Netflix?

NordVPN may not work with Netflix due to Netflix's efforts to block VPN servers, issues with specific server connections, or interference from cached browser data. If your VPN stops working with Netflix, connect to a different NordVPN server in the same country. Clearing your browser cache can also help, as cached data might interfere with your connection. If you’re still experiencing issues, switching servers might correct the problem. For persistent issues, contact NordVPN’s customer support.

What country VPN should I use for Netflix?

You should choose a VPN country based on the Netflix library. My top pick is NordVPN. It offers broad global coverage, high-end security, and anonymity while, working swimmingly with Netflix.

How can I watch US Netflix in the UK?

If you want to watch US Netflix in the UK, use a VPN to get a US IP address. Connect to a US server with a streaming-optimized VPN and log into your Netflix account. A VPN works by routing your internet connection through a server located in the US, masking your actual location. Although you may need to try several servers for stability, you’ll have access to US Netflix content once connected, even if you're physically in the UK.

How do I change my Netflix country with VPN?

To watch Netflix with a VPN, subscribe to a premium service. Download and install the VPN software. Then, connect to a server located in your desired country. Once your IP has changed, log into your Netflix account (or register a new one). Now, you can access the content of that country.

Is it legal to use Netflix with a VPN?

VPN use is legal in most parts of the world, though some authoritarian countries prohibit it. Netflix operates with specific licensing agreements for its TV shows and movies, limiting their availability to particular regions. Consequently, to watch restricted content, use a reliable streaming VPN to mask your location, access servers in the desired country, and enjoy the full range of available content.

Netflix detected Nord and now my normal IP being in the US has restricted almost all of the non Netflix originals but only on my profile, the rest of my family’s profiles are just fine, completely normal. I am still able to use a vpn but without one i cant watch the region shows or movies. Does anyone know if i deleted that profile and made a new one if that would work? Will it go back to normal if I stopped using a vpn? The profile acts the same on any device as well so, deleting for now might be the best option but i dont want to say goodbye to my profile just said. Has anyone else had this problem?

I have found quickly changing cities in USA tends to work. As soon as I see Netflix blocking I switch. Los Angeles is always caught, but Miami, D.C. , and Dallas take a few days to be found. Then I just switch to another. I use ExpressVPN and will drop when subscription expires for other issues.
