How to torrent safely in 2024

In general, however, when it comes to getting the best advice on how to download torrents, there are three important parts:

  1. Get a reliable torrent client (which allows you to download the complete file)
  2. Find a great, regularly updated torrent website with lots of options (where you’ll download the torrent file from)
  3. Select and download the torrent file by focusing on a few important factors
  4. Use a reliable VPN for P2P by Reddit

With that, you’ll be a torrenting master in no time. So let’s dive into how to download torrents safely and hassle-free in 2024.

Download torrents safely | 3 essential TIPS & TRICKS for everyone
2020-12-30

Get a reliable torrent client

To download any torrent file, you’ll need to download and install a torrent client—essentially, a program on your desktop or mobile that will allow you to download the complete file you’re after.

This can be a movie, book, game, software, music, etc. However, you also need to make sure that you’ve set it up properly the first time so that you won’t have to worry about anything else later on.

Usually, these problems include downloading safely and locating your downloaded files.

There are many options when it comes to finding a good torrenting client. Luckily, they’re all free.

The most popular torrent clients include:

  • BitTorrent
  • uTorrent
  • Vuze
  • qBittorrent
  • Deluge

We’ve compared two of the most popular torrent clients (BitTorrent vs uTorrent) and concluded that uTorrent is the better option for many important reasons.

However, you can choose any of these torrenting clients listed above, and you won’t have problems since they have similarly easy methods for downloading their programs.

Downloading our pick, uTorrent, is quite easy. You simply head to their website and click on the big button that says “Free Download” (it will automatically download based on what platform you have):

How to download uTorrent

After that, just install the program, but we recommend you skip the bundled software that comes with it.

We recommend you decline uTorrent's offers

Usually, there are two offers with the option to “Skip” or “Decline” and still installing the program.

In the second offer here, we had to uncheck the pre-checked “Install Opera browser.”

Skip this offer as well

In the last screen, you should leave all options checked.

However, depending on how often you plan on torrenting, you may want to uncheck the “Start uTorrent when Windows starts up.”

Decide if you want uTorrent to start up automatically when Windows starts

If you are torrenting almost constantly, you can leave this checked.

If you plan to do it only rarely, however, we recommend you uncheck it. It’s always better not to start programs automatically when Windows starts up.

How to download torrents safely with a VPN

Now, before you get to the part where you’re downloading torrents, you need to cover yourself.

I mentioned it above in the introduction, but it’s important to reiterate here: torrenting can cause you some or a lot of problems depending on where you are in the world.

For example, you can look at the popular case where one Boston University student was fined $675,000 for downloading some music. Then there’s also the case of the alleged founder of Kickass Torrents, Artem Vaulin, who was arrested when investigators saw his IP address.

You see, that’s how a VPN (Virtual Private Network) works: it hides your IP address, allowing you to appear to be coming from an entirely different location.

Setting up a VPN is no hassle, seeing as you’ll just have to sign up for the service, download the program on your device, and connect with the click of a button to any location on the planet (at least, offered by the VPN service).

However, we recommend you connect to a country that’s on the “safe list” for torrenting. The top country is Switzerland, but the other countries on the list include Spain, the Netherlands, and Mexico.

Remember, however, that the further the VPN server is that you’re connecting with, the slower your speed will be. Here, I’m connecting to a server in Mexico using NordVPN.

For torrenting, we've connected NordVPN with a server in Mexico

Then, you can start torrenting safely, as long as you’re still using the VPN.

However, if you want extra protection, you can set up what’s known as a Socks5 Proxy by configuring your torrent client. Here are some good instructions on how to do that with NordVPN.

We’ve also looked at the best VPNs for torrenting, and we recommend you take a look at that before deciding on a VPN.

Set a default download location

You must know where your downloaded files are going to go. Luckily, using uTorrent (or BitTorrent, or any other popular torrent clients) allows you to set your default download location quickly.

First, you’ll need to click on Options and then Preferences.

How to set your download location in Preferences

Then, simply click on Directories and then check the option “Put new downloads in…”. You can choose an already existing folder or create a new folder for your downloads.

Set your download location

And that’s it! You’re now ready to find your desired torrent files.

Find a dependable torrent website

Now that you’ve got everything set up on your desktop or mobile device, you’ll need to go and find a good website you can trust.

We’ve already gone over the best torrent sites for awesome downloads in 2024, but suffice to say that the classics (The Pirate Bay, 1337x, etc.) are still very much alive and effective.

However, there are also some great torrent sites if you enjoy a particular niche. For movie and TV torrents, we can recommend:

  • YTS
  • EZTV
  • Watchsomuch
  • MkvCage
  • Torrent King

For game torrents, for example, we can recommend:

  • TorrentsGames
  • GazelleGames
  • Download Games Torrents
  • FitGirl Repacks
  • CroTorrents

You have a wide selection when it comes to good torrenting sites, but there’s something you should be aware of.

This is a part of the internet that can have many pitfalls or danger areas, especially since it’s mostly about downloading pirated or copyright content.

Therefore, it lives sort of in the shadow, and in the shadow, you can meet a lot of viruses or hackers.

For that reason, we recommend you always browse torrent sites with your VPN connected. We also recommend you have Malwarebytes and another antivirus program installed that can keep you safe while you’re browsing online.

That way, you can avoid clicking on ghost links and redirecting to spammy sites that can really harm your computer, steal your sensitive info, etc.

Download your torrent file

Now, one of the most important parts for learning how to download torrents: finding and downloading the torrent files on your selected torrent site.

Usually, there are lots of different versions for a specific file, and it can be confusing deciding which one to choose. We will look at the most important factors you should consider when choosing the best version of your desired file.

We’ll explore these ideas by using The Pirate Bay (or one of its many proxies).

Seeders, size, and quality

For this demonstration, we will be looking for the first episode of season 6 of House of Cards.

For such a popular TV show, we get a good amount of options for downloading episode 1 of House of Cards’ 6th season (here, we searched for “House of Cards S06E01,” which is usually the format for finding specific episodes).

The first two results show the usual options for TV episodes, movies, etc.:

Pirate Bay seeders vs leechers

The first one has the most seeders (377), while the second result only has 211 seeders. Remember, seeders (on Pirate Bay written as SE) are the ones that offer up their files to be downloaded by you, and leechers (here, LE) are the ones that are downloading the file at the moment.

Optimally, you’d want to have a high seeder-to-leecher ratio so that with more seeders, your download will be faster.

But here we notice something else: search result 1 has a total file size of 733 MB, but the quality of 720p, while result 2 has a file size of only 212 MB and quality of (probably) 380p or 480p.

Size of file vs quality of file

It’s usually recommended that if you’re watching on your laptop, the lower quality (also known as Standard Definition (SD) at 380p or 480p) will work out fine.

But if you’re watching on a bigger screen (or really care about quality), you should go for the HD quality of 720p or even 1080p, although the file sizes will be bigger.

Check the torrent file comments

Another important thing to do, especially on newer movie files or many software files, is to check the comments section.

That way, you can get feedback on the quality of the file or any problems people had watching the movie, installing the program, etc.

We did a quick search for the movie Venom, which at the time only had a CAM-quality file uploaded. Here’s what one torrenter said:

Check comments on torrent files

As you can see, this particular file has a 6/10 rating for picture quality and a 7/10 rating for audio quality. That’s helpful because if these are too low for your liking (for example, if you’re planning on watching it with other people), then you don’t have to download the file and be disappointed.

However, if you’re just interested in the storyline or simple want to see whether you should bother going to the movies to watch it (a popular behavior for torrenters), then you can download and enjoy.

In the comments section, users will often notify you of any virus warnings, which can help you avoid dirty files.

It’s important here to also decide what kind of file you’ll be downloading. For the most part, in the past, people simply downloaded the actual torrent file, which is a small file that contains all the information about the larger file you want to download.

But you can also avoid that by clicking instead on the magnet link, which isn’t a download at all. It’s essentially a link with all the information your torrent client (like uTorrent) needs to download the larger file.

Pirate Bay's magnet link

This is much faster and more convenient for torrenters. Additionally, the Pirate Bay decided to remove all torrent files in 2012 and have been offering only magnet links since then.

Always choose the magnet link when looking to download torrents.

Check the torrent for unnecessary or harmful files

Once you click on the magnet link (or torrent file), you’ll get a popup in your torrent client, which will show you the contents of the torrent file.

We recommend that you always check these files carefully to make sure you’re not downloading something potentially dangerous. For the House of Cards episode, we’re only selecting to download the movie file (here it’s the .mkv file), and we’ve unchecked the other files.

Check contents and download only necessary files

This is also a good point to check what format the file is in. If you’re downloading movie torrents and hoping to watch them on your TV, you should find out first if your TV can play that type of file.

Checking the contents of your torrent file is also important since you’ll often find a lot of junk files (or even potentially dangerous files).

Here’s one example for when we clicked on an HD version of the movie Halloween:

Always check torrent contents for potentially harmful files

We would highly recommend you not download this type of file.

This is because there are too many smaller, unnecessary files contained here. But, most importantly, we don’t really trust any .lnk file, and we’re pretty sure your antivirus will warn you about this file.

Even if it doesn’t go off, you probably should avoid these types of files. Malware that’s posing as a TV series episode is not a new thing. In fact, you can be almost sure that some of the torrents pretending to be, i.e., Money Heist S02E17, will be infected. Therefore, if you want to be absolutely sure you’re safe, you better use a legit streaming service.

For example, watching the last part of Money Heist is easy even if you’re in a country where Netflix or other streaming service doesn’t work. With a VPN, you will be able to switch your IP address and access your long-awaited show.

(Optional) Scan the file for viruses

Now, this is an optional step, but one that you should be doing from time to time (especially if you think the file you’re downloading is a bit sketchy).

Once the file finishes downloading, simply run it through your antivirus program and/or Malwarebytes to check it for any dangerous stuff.

This is important to remember since many torrent files can contain some pretty nasty stuff.

For the most part, hopefully, you’ll see this all-clear message from your antivirus program:

The Pirate Bay virus scan

Seed the file for others

After you’ve finished downloading the file, you should make sure that you’re seeding the file for others to download.

Remember to seed torrents after your file has finished downloading

This is good for the health of the file and, in general, for the torrenting community, which, at its core, is kept alive by fellow torrenters seeding files.

One common argument against seeding is that it’s one guaranteed way to be “caught” by watching corporations or governments. However, remember, if you’re torrenting safely (using a VPN), your IP address and true location are hidden.

With that, you’ll be part of a powerful, growing torrenting community that is eager to share content across borders and languages, helping more people to gain knowledge or simply be entertained.

Anything that is created by another person or persons and is not free to use and you’re using/seeing it (like movies) is illegal to download/use/watch. Those people have worked hard and should be rewarded so whenever possible pay to see a movie or to play a game and reward those creators. And yes, when you can’t pay for it, use a safe torrent downloader and a vpn.

uTorrent is a safe torrent downloader as well as BitTorrent. They both work just fine. What’s more important is the VPN you use. Torrenting without vpn is just not a good idea. Choose one of the best vpn for torrenting like NordVPN or Surfshark or Windscribe. These are great vpn companies that will protect you no matter what you’re doing online. And most have 2 or 3 year plans that are very inexpensive and a no-brainer. Why not invest a few bucks monthly to stay safe online?

I want to know how to hide torrenting from your isp because I just learned they know pretty much everything you do online and I hate that. I don’t want them to spy on me! Also how do I hide my IP address when torrenting for free? Is that even possible? Bear with me guys, as I’m very new to this whole thing. I’m not knowledgeable about this but I do want to learn so I will listen to any advice you guys have to share. Thanks a lot.

You shouldn’t rely on free tools to do such an important task like hide your IP address when torrenting. Torrenting without vpn and I mean a paid one is just not a smart move. Pay for a good vpn and you will be very safe online and your ISP won’t know a thing.

        Tom October 1, 2019 at 7PM

You can’t torrent without vpn, a paid vpn that is. If you want to hide torrenting from your isp then you need a good vpn, that’s all. A vpn like ExpressVPN or NordVPN will do nicely. While their monthly costs are big when you go for a bigger plan then you’ll get a much better deal. The best deal is the Nordvpn 3 year deal which will only cost around $100 for 3 years of service! Also make sure to pick a safe torrent downloader like BitTorrent or uTorrent. The combo between a good vpn and a safe way to torrent will keep you protected and hide your ip from anyone, not just your isp.

BitTorrent is probably the safest torrenting program out there. uTorrent is also a good choice. It’s a matter of personal preference between the two. I just happen to like BT, that’s all. But, no matter what program you end up using try to also use a VPN for torrenting so you can stay safe. When I got started I wasn’t using one but now I wouldn’t do that because it’s just way too risky plus it’s very easy and cheap to find a good vpn nowadays.

Is streaming illegal? I’m guessing it is because you’re using someone else’s content, no? Why do people do it? Can you make that much money from the ads shown on such sites? I just don’t understand why some people do this. Do they earn so much money to make it ok for them.

      1. Robyn
        Robyn September 29, 2019 at 8PM

Yes, watching TV series or movies that are copyrighted is illegal because you are doing so for free, without paying the people that made the movie which isn’t fair. It’s best to use a vpn for streaming so you don’t risk anything. Or look for the movie on torrents, and using a safe torrent downloader, download the movie with a vpn and watch it. Torrenting without vpn is not good, always use one. I’ve been using NordVPN and got it really cheap at $2.99 per month on a 3 year plan and I’m very happy with it. It’s one of the best vpn for torrenting. They have a multitude of servers all over the world so you’ll get great speeds no matter your location.

What do you guys think about torrenting without vpn? Is it that dangerous? I’ve been torrenting for a few weeks, without any vpn, paid or free and I’ve seen those scary ads that say you should upgrade to a paid option to stay safe. Is that really needed? I have mixed feelings about this because I have friends that have been torrenting for years and nothing bad has happened to them. They’ve probably downloaded thousands of games, movies and songs and it has all been good for them. So, is it worth it to invest in a vpn and which is the best vpn for torrenting? Oh, and can I maybe use a free vpn for torrenting and if yes, which one would you recommend?

Many people don’t use a vpn when torrenting but that doesn’t mean it’s a good thing. Torrenting without vpn can lead to trouble plus with a vpn you can stay safe when you’re online and not be spied upon by anyone. I wouldn’t recommend using a free vpn for torrenting because that’s risky as well. You can use a free vpn for anything else but torrenting. But you should know that a free option will never be as good as a paid one. And you can get an account with reputable vpns like NordVPN or Surfshark for as low as $2.99 or $2 per month on a 2+ year deal. You can pay $48 for 2 years with Surfshark and then you can download away without worries. I mean, isn’t your safety worth $48? You won’t have to ever wonder if anyone is watching what you’re doing or if you’ll get caught torrenting.

Torrenting without vpn is never safe no matter the platform you’re using. And I would never recommend you use a free vpn for torrenting because that’s just like asking for trouble. I know you might want to save some money but it’s not worth the risk. Just go with a cheaper option and there are plenty of them, and make sure you are safe while torrenting. It’s always better to be safe now even if you have to pay a little for it, than to be sorry you didn’t later on.

Ok. Thank you for the reply. I looked around and I saw Windscribe and Surfshark as being good options that don’t cost a lot; when you go for a bigger plan. Which is the best vpn for android from these two? Or is there another one that is better? Also, is there a safe torrent downloader that I should be using with this VPN? I would like to set things up so I don’t risk anything while still not paying an arm and a leg if possible.

Well, Windscribe does cost less so you should probably try that and see how it goes. I haven’t used Windscribe so I don’t know how it is. But I did use Surfshark and I know it’s very good, with plenty of servers. I recommend you at least give it a test and see how it compares to Windscribe and any others. To make torrenting on android safe you need a vpn like Surfshark or maybe Windscribe, I don’t know.

You can probably use free VPNs for regular browsing but that won’t solve the problem in the long run. Also these free options don’t work for torrenting. You will need to get a paid vpn and I recommend NordVPN as it’s the best vpn for torrenting. Or if you want something really inexpensive just go for Windscribe which is a good option at a discounted price. You can get it for as low as $1 per month. No matter what, get a vpn for torrenting because otherwise anyone can see what you’re doing. Torrenting without vpn is just madness and should be avoided especially since there are so many good, cheap options available right now. You don’t need a lot of money to get a good, safe way to torrent.

Which is the best vpn for torrenting? I’ve heard a lot of great things about NordVPN and ExpressVPN. They both seem to be great at first glance, it’s just a difference in pricing. I wonder if Nord is a better choice overall or if ExpressVPN is worth the extra dollars you pay for it.

      1. Torres
        Torres September 26, 2019 at 9AM

Both are very good vpns in their own right, and the best vpn for torrenting, if you ask me, is NordVPN. Some people say ExpressVPN is better but I disagree because Nord has much more servers and you always have a lot of good ones to connect to when torrenting. It doesn’t matter where you are located, you’ll always get great speeds for downloads. Going with Nord (got a longer plan to get a big discount) and torrenting from a few safe torrent sites like 123movies was one of the best things I’ve done this year. I’ve tried Express as well and they are also very good, but they are much more expensive than Nord and I honestly prefer Nord’s dashboard. It has a certain feeling to it that I enjoy.

Different people have different answers for your question. So which is the best vpn for torrenting? It’s probably one of the following: NordVPN, ExpressVPN, CyberGhost or Surfshark. Either of them should do fine and as for the best one, you should be the judge of that. It’s a matter of personal preference. I prefer Surf shark vpn but you may like ExpressVPN better. Or maybe you’ll want better prices and go for a NordVPN 3 year deal. Go with either of them and you’ll be just fine if you ask me. Pay as much or as little as you’d like per month by getting a bigger plan, of 1, 2 or 3 years and stay safe when torrenting.

Is downloading movies illegal for personal use? I don’t want to sell them or give them away. I just want to watch them at home. Does that make it illegal? I don’t want to get into trouble and I do like movies a lot. Should I be looking for a safe torrent downloader so I can stay safe while getting these movies?

“Is downloading movies illegal for personal use?” Yes, it is. Downloading anything that is copyrighted for your own use or for selling or distributing it in some form is considered illegal.

Is it a good idea to have a few safe torrent sites to download from? Does this reduce the risk of me getting caught or of my PC getting infected with malware or viruses?

              1. IOP
                IOP September 23, 2019 at 2PM

Yes it is a good idea to have safe torrent sites and to only download from a handful of reliable sites that won’t fill your PC with malware and viruses. The smart and safe way to download movies and anything else like music and video games is to have a strong VPN and to also download from a few sites like TPB (the pirate bay), 1337x, limetorrents. Sometimes either of these will be down but they do come back, especially TPB so keep trying. When I first started using torrents I just wanted to play different games and I just didn’t have enough money to buy them. The same was for the movies and music. Now, I use torrents to test out games and when I find ones I actually like I go ahead and buy them to support the developers. Anyway, torrenting without vpn is just asking for trouble so don’t do it.

Is torrenting safe with a VPN? Yes and no. If you use cheap, unreliable VPNs then this is questionable. If you want to download torrents on a regular basis then you need a paid VPN that is actually good, no doubt about it. The safest way to download torrents is to use a reputable VPN. Torrenting without vpn is just asking for trouble. There are good options that don’t cost an arm and a leg and they offer the utmost protection you can get. The question is are you willing to gamble when it comes to torrenting? I am not and I want to make sure I remain private when doing anything online, so a great VPN is a must have for me. The monthly price tag is just the price I am willing to pay to feel safe. And that’s a small price to pay, for me at least.

I feel the same way. I just put everything in balance – do I want to take the risk on torrenting without vpn? No, I sure don’t. Even if prices for a vpn would have been higher I would still have chosen this option to stay safe and not sorry. But, as it stands, there are plenty of vpns that are very affordable. The only safe way to torrent is to use a good vpn and that doesn’t cost much so it’s a no-brainer.

It’s always hard to part with your money and some people feel that a VPN is not needed, but I disagree. That money is well spent on a good, reputable vpn provider because it will keep you safe. We all know we’re under some sort of surveillance when we’re online with companies always wanting to know our browsing habits so they can serve us ads that we’re attracted to. Then there’s the government that wants to know what we’re doing. Torrenting without vpn is a no-no and should never be done. A good vpn is anywhere from $1 to $5 per month so not a fortune and it can save you a fortune in money, time, worries, etc.

It’s important to pick the best torrent sites like ThePirateBay or any other you like yet the most important thing is to have a good VPN. Without one you are at risk every time you download anything. This is how to be safe when using torrents: get a good VPN that protects you.

Yes, it will really help everyone to download torrents safely. I agree to have this fast and effective way to see the content on different devices by downloading torrents. The scammers and hackers are very active and always keep your safety at the top while downloading anything on the Internet. A very well written post and well done!

There’s a lot to take in since I’m just getting started, but you packed in tons of useful tips and instructions, so this was definitely worth the read. I had no idea that’s how magnet links worked. Thanks!

Well, from experience some of these VPNs can’t be trusted 100% to download a torrent file to your computer anonymously and without leaving footprints that would lead right to you. Are there any other ways known to safely download torrents without getting caught and setting off any red flags?

Your torrent primer covered the two most important aspects of torrenting: Safety and Speed. If you’re going to download torrents, you don’t want any viruses or anything else that’s malicious. You also want something with some power in terms of speed. Otherwise, you’re going to have headaches with your experience.

Man, I used to torrent without a VPN all the time, and it is a bad idea! I’m using Astrill VPN now and it keeps me super safe. I get to enjoy my TV shows in peace now. I know a lot of people say they don’t torrent much any more, but I never understood why – the technology to do it only gets safer and safer!

I’ve been downloading torrents for a while, but I never really thought about the risks until I read some testimonies online. This guide was really helpful, I’ll take more care in the future.
