One year $4.99/month $5.00

Payment options Credit card, PayPal, Apple Pay, Bitcoin, cryptocurrencies, UnionPay, Paymentwall Credit/debit card, PayPal

In terms of pricing, ExpressVPN and VyprVPN are quite the opposite. VyprVPN is a more budget-friendly option, while ExpressVPN is more pricey. You should also consider that neither services have a free plan or free trial option.

Regardless, VyprVPN is the obvious choice for those who want an excellent VPN provider at a reasonable price. However, you can’t pay for this service in crypto.

ExpressVPN pricing

ExpressVPN doesn’t have a free version or a free trial. You can only commit from the get-go by choosing one of the following plans:

  • $12.95/month for the monthly plan
  • $9.99/month for the six-month plan
  • $4.99/month for the annual plan

Furthermore, this VPN provider accepts payments with credit/debit cards, PayPal, online transfers, Bitcoin, and other cryptocurrencies. In other words, you can make anonymous payments.

ExpressVPN subscription options

The best you can hope for is a 48% discount when buying straight from the source. However, you can also try your luck with various ExpressVPN coupon codes. At least the 30-day money-back guarantee partially outweighs the lack of a free trial.

VyprVPN pricing

Same as ExpressVPN, VyprVPN doesn’t offer a free version or a free trial. And this provider has only two plans:

Compared to ExpressVPN, VyprVPN lacks cryptocurrency payments. Still, you can pay with your credit or debit card and PayPal. It isn’t exactly ideal if you want to hide the fact you’re purchasing a VPN.

VyprVPN prices (December 2021)

The lengthiest option grants you an impressive 50% discount. You could find an even better deal by looking through the various VyprVPN coupon codes. Moreover, all plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Speed comparison

ExpressVPN showed consistent performance and remarkably faster connection times than VyprVPN. This achievement can mostly be attributed to in-house Lightway protocol. Additionally, ExpressVPN utilizes the standard IKEv2 and OpenVPN protocols to ensure fast and stable connections.

In comparison, VyprVPN has the proprietary Chameleon protocol, IPsec, WireGuard, and OpenVPN. Still, it isn’t enough to surpass ExpressVPN. During our ExpressVPN vs. VyprVPN speed tests, VyprVPN’s speeds were average at best. Furthermore, there was a significant drop in performance over long distances.

Therefore, in our VyprVPN vs. ExpressVPN speed testing, the clear winner is ExpressVPN.

ExpressVPN vs. VyprVPN: which is more secure?

ExpressVPN VyprVPN
Encryption AES-256 AES-256
Jurisdiction The British Virgin Islands Switzerland
Logging Independently-audited and court-proven no-logs policy Independently-audited no-logs policy
Kill switch Yes Yes
Leak protection DNS, IPv6 DNS, IPv6, WebRTC
RAM servers All None

ExpressVPN and VyprVPN really show they care for your online security. Both VPN providers come with the necessary security features:

  • AES-256 encryption
  • Kill switch
  • IP and DNS leak protection
  • Verified no-logs policies
  • Secure tunneling protocols

Furthermore, the VPNs are based in privacy-friendly jurisdictions and have had their no-logs policies verified. And yet, ExpressVPN has a slight edge in this category. Its no-logs policy has been proven true in court and all of the server fleet runs on RAM modules only. The last tidbit means that all data stored on their network gets wiped regularly.

Privacy

Regarding privacy, you will enjoy a safe and unmonitored experience with both providers. ExpressVPN is located in the British Virgin Islands, which isn’t part of the 5, 9, or 14-Eyes Alliance. And VyprVPN’s headquarters are in Switzerland, also outside of any intelligence alliance. Therefore, there’s no government surveillance or necessity to collect your data.

Logging

There is not much to talk about here, as another fantastic benefit of both VPNs is that they offer verified no-logs policies. ExpressVPN has an audited and court-proven no-logs policy, while VyprVPN has just an independently audited one.

Therefore, you can rest safe that these VPNs don’t collect any personal information that hackers or even ISPs can compromise.

Servers location

Server specification ExpressVPN VyprVPN
Servers N/A 700+
Countries 105+ 64+
All physical servers No Yes
Owns all servers No Yes

Probably one of the most significant differences in our ExpressVPN vs. VyprVPN comparison is the network of servers. VyprVPN has 700+ servers in 64+ countries, while ExpressVPN easily stands out with its vast network spanning 105+ countries.

ExpressVPN changes the game even more by utilizing RAM-only servers that delete all of your online activities after reboot, which VyprVPN unfortunately lacks. On the other hand, VyprVPN owns its entire fleet of servers and there are no virtual ones, meaning they are physically located in the corresponding countries.

In the end, it’s a tie. Some will find ExpressVPN’s massive global coverage a must-have, while others will prioritize bare-metal hardware for their slight performance advantage.

Features comparison

Features ExpressVPN VyprVPN
Smart DNS ✅MediaStreamer ❌No
Ad & tracker blocker ✅Yes ✅Yes
Split tunneling ✅Yes ✅Yes
Specialized servers ✅Yes ✅Yes

As you might guess, both ExpressVPN and VyprVPN offer a solid range of features that improve your experience. However, ExpressVPN has a slight advantage over its rival.

Smart DNS

Smart DNS is crucial for devices that don’t support VPNs. With a VPN that utilizes the Smart DNS feature, you’ll bypass geo-restrictions in no time. Only ExpressVPN offers this feature.

ExpressVPN includes a Smart DNS under the name MediaStreamer. It automatically changes DNS servers to enable access to geo-restricted sites or services on devices that lack VPN support. You can use it on various streaming peripherals to unlock region-blocked content.

Ad & tracker blocker

Specific tools meant to block adware, user trackers, and malicious websites make your browsing experience much safer. Both competitors offer blockers for specific purposes.

ExpressVPN includes Threat Manager which defeats user trackers scattered across the web. This way, online advertisers can’t collect data about your browsing habits and target you via personalized ads. Threat Manager is available on iOS, macOS, and Linux.

VyprVPN has a Malicious Site Block feature for blocking malicious websites included in the provider’s blacklist. However, you can still bypass the warning and enter the suspicious site. Worst of all, Malicious Site Block is only available on macOS and Android.

Split tunneling

Split tunneling gives you more control over your VPN data stream by routing the traffic through particular apps.

ExpressVPN includes split tunneling on Windows, macOS, Android, and routers. You also have three options – routing all apps through the VPN, selecting which apps to always use the VPN, or selecting apps that shouldn’t use the VPN.

On the contrary, VyprVPN’s split tunneling feature is known as Connection per App. It allows you to choose which apps can use the VPN. But VyprVPN’s split tunneling is a bit restricted, as it is available only for macOS and Android.

Obfuscated servers

One of the main reasons for utilizing a VPN is to access the free internet without restrictions. Unfortunately, some countries like China oppose the use of VPNs, blocking access to this software across the board. Therefore, obfuscated servers are a must as they hide all traces of VPN usage.

ExpressVPN automatically employs its Stealth servers. They modify the encrypted traffic and show it as regular web traffic, helping you avoid Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) of your online traffic.

Compared to ExpressVPN, VyprVPN also comes with unique obfuscated servers that the Chameleon protocol supports. The only difference is that you can turn them on manually. These servers change the metadata of OpenVPN and make it inaccessible to DPI surveillance.

Other features

Additionally, ExpressVPN comes with a couple of neat extras:

  • Streaming servers. These are servers dedicated for streaming, meaning you’ll enjoy a seamless video experience with zero lag and buffering.
  • Port forwarding. A feature most useful for boosting download and upload speed when torrenting.
  • Parallel connections. An iOS exclusive feature, it speeds up VPN connection times.
  • A built-in password manager. A free perk, it’s a tool that lets users generate secure passwords, store them in one convenient place, and share them with other people.

Thus, if you want a VPN that isn’t completely bare bones, ExpressVPN is the way to go.

Netflix and streaming comparison

Streaming platforms ExpressVPN VyprVPN
Netflix US ✅Yes ✅Yes
Other Netflix libraries ✅Yes ✅Yes
Amazon Prime Video ✅Yes ✅Yes
Hulu ✅Yes ❌No
HBO Max ✅Yes ✅Yes
Disney+ ✅Yes ✅Yes
BBC iPlayer ✅Yes ✅Yes
YouTube TV ✅Yes ✅Yes

In terms of streaming, both ExpressVPN and VyprVPN can be your top streaming VPN choice. We tested these VPN providers in unblocking some of the most popular streaming platforms, such as Netflix, BBC iPlayer, YouTube, and Amazon Prime, and they managed to do that. Also, both ExpressVPN and VyprVPN offer stable connections, so buffering wasn’t an issue.

ExpressVPN unblocks Netflix US

What’s notable is that despite working with other US-only streaming platforms, VyprVPN struggled to unblock Hulu. We tried multiple servers, even rebooted our devices a couple of times, but the VPN still couldn’t manage to bypass this platform’s strict geo-blocks and robust VPN detection methods.

Device compatibility

Device support ExpressVPN VyprVPN
Major dedicated apps Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android Windows, macOS, iOS, Android
Other dedicated apps Android TV, Fire TV & Fire Stick, Kindle Fire, Chromebook, Router applet Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, Router applet
Browser extensions Chrome (and Chromium-based browsers), Brave, Edge, Firefox, Opera Chrome
Manual setup Router, NAS, nVidia Shield, Kodi, Roku, Chromecast, gaming consoles Linux, Kodi, Apple TV, Roku
Simultaneous devices 5 30

ExpressVPN and VyprVPN have excellent device compatibility, offering dedicated apps for Windows, MacOS, Android, iOS, and even routers. However, ExpressVPN won this round again.

ExpressVPN covers all major OS and also offers browser extensions for Chrome, Opera, and Firefox, enhancing your secure browsing experience. In comparison, VyprVPN has a limited number of browser extensions. More precisely, you’ll get an extension only for Chrome (and Chromium-based browsers). Firefox is notably left out. Furthermore, ExpressVPN’s MediaStreamer feature lets you use it on various peripherals while VyprVPN lacks any sort of Smart DNS for this purpose.

Desktop applications

ExpressVPN and VyprVPN offer applications for Windows and macOS. ExpressVPN’s apps for Windows and macOS are very similar as they have the same interface and features. The only significant difference is that only Apple PC owners get access to Threat Manager.

ExpressVPN Mac Application

VyprVPN’s Windows and macOS apps are virtually identical interface-wise, but the feature choice is different. Surprisingly, the Mac version is better equipped. The Windows app lacks split tunneling and the Malicious Site Blocker feature.

VyprVPN for Mac main menu and server list

Finally, both services come with dedicated router applications with GUIs, which is pretty rare. ExpressVPN’s is compatible with Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Raspberry Pi OS, Linux Mint, and Arch. VyprVPN’s is available for various router firmware such as DD-WRT, OpenWRT, AsusWRT, and more.

Mobile applications

Both providers allow you to utilize their services on Android and iOS devices. Unsurprisingly, they don’t look much different from their desktop counterparts.

ExpressVPN iOS app

ExpressVPN’s mobile apps are sleek and easy to use. The only key factor here is that they offer somewhat differing features. The Android client comes with Protection Summary, Security Assistant, and split tunneling, which the iOS version lacks. The provider tries to make up for this by including Parallel Connections on iPhones.

VyprVPN for iOS - Customize menu

In the meanwhile, VyprVPN for Android and iOS are very similar design-wise. But yet again, the features are not the same across both. For example, the Android version comes with a Malicious Site Blocker and split tunneling, but it lacks the IKEv2 protocol. iOS, on the other hand, doesn’t get these perks, but there’s a broader tunneling protocol choice.

Torrenting

P2P specifications ExpressVPN VyprVPN
Allowed on ✅All servers ✅All servers
Free SOCKS5 proxy ❌No ❌No
Split tunneling ✅Yes ✅Yes (Connection Per App)
Port forwarding ✅Yes ❌No

When it comes to torrenting, you can definitely use both providers. So, it’s pretty straightforward. ExpressVPN and VyprVPN have P2P specialized servers that allow you smooth and issue-free torrenting.

The only difference is in the download speeds. During our tests, ExpressVPN had better download speeds, leaving VyprVPN in the dust. Therefore, we can say that this round goes to ExpressVPN.

China

Specifications ExpressVPN VyprVPN
Works in China ✅Yes ✅Yes
Stealth VPN ✅Yes (Stealth Servers) ✅Yes (Chameleon protocol)
Tor over VPN ❌No ❌No

As VPNs should unblock restricted content, we decided to test ExpressVPN vs. VyprVPN in China.

The Great Firewall of China makes you have some difficulties when bypassing online censorship. Luckily, ExpressVPN and VyprVPN can help you overcome this issue due to their robust VPN protocols and obfuscated servers that hide that you’re even using a VPN.

ExpressVPN’s Stealth servers bypass geo-restrictions in no time and give you access to blocked content. Also, VyprVPN has its Chameleon protocol, which is also successful in unblocking your preferred services.

Therefore, we concluded that it’s a tie.

Customer support

Support options ExpressVPN VyprVPN
24/7 live chat ✅Yes ✅Yes
Phone Line ❌No ❌No
Email  ✅Yes ✅Yes
Knowledgebase ✅Yes ✅Yes

Last but not least, customer support is another aspect you must consider when choosing a VPN. ExpressVPN and VyprVPN both offer 24/7 live chat, email, and detailed online guides, such as a knowledgebase and FAQs.

As a result, you can get assistance with any issue you might have, as their teams are pretty knowledgeable. However, you must be registered to use their live chat and email support, while the other support options are available to everyone.

Speed is my main goal so ExpressVPN does have an edge between these 2. They both look good in terms of security. Price not being an issue, is vyprvn and expressvpn a lifetime apart in terms of speed? at the end o the day, ExpressVPN seems the clear winner.

ExpressVPN is pretty expensive and I did try Vyprvpn out of curiosity and I must say that it works with Google chrome very well. I was also amazed how secure it is as it provides a security level that is very much comparable to ExpressVPN. It bypasses blocking and throttling through chameleon protocol, which is as effective as the method used by ExpressVPN.

I honestly wasn’t expecting VyprVPN to put up such a strong fight! ExpressVPN is very secure, offers great speed, privacy, no logs, torrenting and … you name it. Their only downside is their price tag which is a little high compared to other VPNs. Now that I read this comparison I feel that VyprVPN needs just a few changes to become one of the really big boys in this market. It’s impressive to hear that with just 700 servers Vypr can almost match ExpressVPN when it comes to speed; seeing as Express has over 3000 servers! How is this possible? Are their servers located more strategically? I don’t get what is happening here. At security and anonymity it seems that Express is a bit better (especially when it comes to anonymity which is very important for such a service) but again, Vypr is unexpectedly close. Vypr should also have a 2-year and 3-year plan where their prices would go down considerably and attract more clients this way. I would probably use them if the price was around $3-$4 monthly and I think they are missing out by not having such plans.

After trying several VPN providers and having frustrated with different issues that crop up with different providers, I find that Express VPN has the best download speed. It is the fastest among the ones I have used and now also accepts bitcoin payment.

Yes, it’s great to see ExpressVPN offer Bitcoin payments. When we last updated the speed section of our VyprVPN and ExpressVPN review, the latter demonstrated truly exceptional performance. Meanwhile, VyprVPN was somewhat of a disappointment.

ExpressVPN is the clear winner for those who are expecting better security features. However, given the fact that VyprVPN offers a lower end of service for VPN, it is also the preferred VPN service provider for those needing basic VPN needs

I’m an ExpressVPN fan through and through. NordVPN is its only real competition but I’ll always go with ExpressVPN as long as it maintains its features and pricing. Nice try by VyprVPN but they’re not in the same league. No comparison and if you want a VPN, you should go for the best unless you’re a school kid trying to watch YouTube on the school’s computers.

Both VPN apps are easy to use and allow users to surf with anonymity, Both support China. However, ExpressVPN is edges ahead with its greater number of privacy and security features as well as more servers and server locations. The major plus is support of P2P / torrenting. It also offers faster and more stable connection.

VyprVPN gave a good fight! I wasn’t expecting it, and if you’re only worried about encryption then VyprVPN is a good choice as well! I think people sometimes don’t realize how many different VPNs there are, apart from the big ones, that also offer a good service.
