NordVPN vs PIA (Private Internet Access) in 2024: which one is better?
Both NordVPN and Private Internet Access (PIA) are well-known, top-rated VPN service providers frequently discussed or even recommended by users on various forums. Despite many similarities, they are also quite different and may satisfy different needs.
NordVPN is a market leader that offers an extensive server fleet, robust security and privacy features, lightning-fast speeds, and great value for money overall. Meanwhile, PIA offers all the essential VPN features at a lower price, appealing to those who want to save some money.
Although NordVPN is praised for its premium quality, PIA can also meet some specific needs, especially considering it is a cheaper option. I put both service providers through various tests to discover a true winner.
PIA vs NordVPN: specifications
PIA shines as a cheaper option with unlimited simultaneous connections when compared to NordVPN. However, NordVPN offers a wider server network and excels at unblocking geo-restricted content from anywhere.

Despite the differences in price, servers, and other aspects, both NordVPN and PIA offer a 30-day money-back guarantee and utmost privacy with a no-logs policy. They also provide modern encryption protocols and compatibility with all major platforms. Depending on your needs, either VPN might be suitable, so let’s take a closer look at each feature separately.
Private Internet Access vs NordVPN price
NordVPN prices range from $2.99/month to $14.99/month, while PIA VPN costs between $2.03/month and $11.95/month. However, both services offer reduced prices for longer subscriptions. In other words, the larger the subscription, the less you pay per month. They also have similar subscription lengths—the shortest being a month and the longest two or three years.
Plans and payments | NordVPN | PIA VPN |
One month | $12.99/month | $11.95/month |
One year | $4.59/month | $3.33/month |
Two years | $2.99/month | N/A |

Money-back guarantee | 30 days | 30 days |
Payment options | Credit card, Google Pay, Amazon Pay, ACH Transfer, cryptocurrencies, UnionPay, cash | Credit card, PayPal, cryptocurrencies |
Overall, PIA VPN is a cheaper option than NordVPN. PIA VPN cheapest plan for 3 years costs $2.03/month, while NordVPN’s longest 2-year subscription costs $2.99/month. However, I recommend looking deeper into each provider’s features included in a subscription to assess its value for money.
In addition, you can always take advantage of 7-day free trials and a 30-day money-back guarantee. I downloaded both service providers’ free trials and was satisfied with the experience. Both NordVPN and PIA sent me reminders before my free-trial ended, so I didn’t miss the pay day. Talking about the money-back guarantee, neither NordVPN nor PIA asked for a reason why I wanted to quit. I got my money back in less than 3 days with both.
NordVPN vs PIA speed tests
Connection speeds are arguably the most critical aspect of a VPN service. After all, it affects all other use cases while the virtual private network is enabled.
After comparison, the differences were quite noticeable. While both NordVPN and PIA VPN are among the fastest VPN services, NordVPN demonstrated greater speeds when connecting to more distant servers compared to PIA. However, it is important to note that PIA uses the WireGuard protocol, while NordVPN uses a proprietary and enhanced version of this protocol called NordLynx.
NordVPN speed test:
Download speed, Mbps | Upload speed, Mbps
The USA | 454 (90.8%) | 437 (87.4%) |
Canada | 466 (93.2%) | 343 (68.6%) |
The UK | 485 (97%) | 473 (94.6%) |
Germany | 475 (95%) | 436 (87.2%) |
France | 475 (95%) | 313 (62.6%) |
Australia | 460 (92%) | 278 (55.6%) |
Japan | 472 (94.4%) | 305 (61%) |
PIA speed test:
Download speed, Mbps | Upload speed, Mbps
The USA | 228 (46%) | 113 (26%) |
Canada | 294 (59%) | 165 (33%) |
The UK | 337 (68%) | 89 (17%) |
Germany | 265 (53%) | 163 (33%) |
France | 343 (69%) | 145 (29%) |
Australia | 286 (57%) | 68 (13%) |
Japan | 222 (44%) | 75 (15%) |
I tested the speeds in several server locations to check how distance affects performance. Firstly, I noticed that connecting in different states of the USA affects neither NordVPN nor PIA speeds at all. Both service providers performed well, ensuring lightning-fast speeds.
NordVPN maintained this performance even when I connected to servers far away from the USA. Whether I chose servers in Europe or Oceania, NordVPN retained 90% of the original speed on average.
Meanwhile, with PIA I didn’t get the same results. The results strongly depended on the distance, sometimes reaching a 25% difference in download speeds. Also, at best, PIA retained just around 70% of the original speed.
Overall, NordVPN retained better speeds and consistency compared to PIA.
Netflix and other streaming platforms
Although you can compare them, NordVPN and PIA cannot compete when it comes to streaming. NordVPN wins by a mile, effortlessly bypassing geo-restrictions on all major streaming services. Although PIA isn’t totally useless for streaming, it only succeeded at unblocking several platforms during my tests.
Streaming platforms | NordVPN | PIA |
Netflix US | ✅Yes | ✅Yes |
Other Netflix libraries | ✅Yes | ❌No |
Amazon Prime Video | ✅Yes | ❌No |
Hulu | ✅Yes | ✅Yes |
HBO Max | ✅Yes | ❌No |
Disney+ | ✅Yes | ❌No |
BBC iPlayer | ✅Yes | ❌No |
YouTube TV | ✅Yes | ✅Yes |
DAZN | ✅Yes | ❌No |
ESPN | ✅Yes | ✅Yes |
NordVPN easily accessed 10 out of 10 streaming platforms I tested. On top of unblocking Netflix US, I had no issues unblocking 15+ other Netflix libraries, including the UK, Canada, Japan and others. I smoothly accessed Amazon Prime US and UK, just as most content-rich US services like Hulu, Max,YouTube TV, and Disney+. What impressed me the most, was its prowess against BBC iPlayer and ITVX notorious VPN detection systems.
PIA proved up to the task of unblocking Netflix (US and Netherlands), Hulu, YouTube TV and ESPN. However, all my attempts to access Prime, Max, Disney+, and DAZN proved unsuccessful. Neither could it fly under the radar of BBC iPlayer. No matter the UK server I chose, I just kept on getting the “BBC iPlayer doesn’t work with VPN” message.
To sum up, NordVPN is a victor when it comes to streaming. Although PIA delivers sufficient streaming speeds, it fails to bypass geo-blocks. NordVPN, on the other hand, punches through geo-walls effortlessly and unblocks a wide range of platforms.
Server locations
A huge network of servers is necessary to avoid overcrowding, secure better connectivity, and get access to a variety of geo-restricted content. While both NordVPN and PIA excel in this area, NordVPN is slightly better.
NordVPN | PIA | |
Servers | 7000+ | Unclear |
Countries | 118+ | 90+ |
Virtual locations | ✅Yes | ✅Yes |
Specialty servers | ✅Yes | ❌No |
Owns all servers | ❌No | ❌No |
RAM-only servers | ✅Yes | ✅Yes |
Currently, NordVPN offers 7000+ servers across 118+ countries. Unfortunately, PIA does not disclose the exact number of servers, only stating that it has servers in 90 countries. This makes NordVPN more appealing in terms of bypassing geo-restricted content and great connectivity.
I tried contacting PIA customer support regarding server count, but they couldn’t provide an exact number. This is unfortunate because it doesn’t really scream the transparency I’m seeking.
Fortunately, both NordVPN and PIA operate on RAM-only servers to prevent excess data storage on hard drives. They also have physical and virtual servers to provide more country options.
Overall, both NordVPN and PIA are great options regarding server count. However, if you seek clarity and a confirmed bigger country selection, I recommend choosing NordVPN.
Torrenting
Peer-to-peer (P2P) enthusiasts frequently have to use torrenting VPNs because the file-sharing technology is usually restricted in some ways. For example, torrenting of copyrighted files is illegal in the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and most states in the European Union.
Luckily, neither NordVPN nor PIA restricts torrenting on their servers. In fact, NordVPN even has specialized P2P servers for improved download and upload speeds. Meanwhile, Private Internet Access users can enable port forwarding to maximize performance.
NordVPN | PIA | |
Allowed on | ✅All servers | ✅All servers |
Free SOCKS5 proxy | ✅Yes | ✅Yes |
Split tunneling | ✅Yes (Windows, Android, Android TV) | ✅Yes (Windows, macOS, Android, Android TV) |
Port forwarding | ❌No | ✅Yes |
The two providers also have some non-essential but nice-to-have features for torrenting. Specifically, these are split tunneling and SOCKS5 proxies. The first allows users to limit VPN traffic to the torrent client and use the web as if nothing is out of the ordinary. Meanwhile, the proxy can be an alternative to a VPN connection or a bonus fail-safe.
Ultimately, NordVPN and Private Internet Access have some mild differences but are on par regarding torrenting.
Private Internet Access vs NordVPN: which is more secure?
NordVPN and PIA are well-known for their extensive security features. They both employ the latest tunneling protocols, which are faster and more secure than older alternatives.
NordVPN | PIA | |
Encryption | AES-256 | AES-256 |
Hash | SHA-512 | SHA1 and SHA2 |
Jurisdiction | 🔒Panama | ⚠️USA |
Logging | Independently-audited no-logs policy | Court-proven and independently-audited |
Kill switch | ✅2 kill switches | ✅Yes |
Leak protection | DNS, IPv6, WebRTC | DNS, IPv6, WebRTC |
RAM servers | All | All |
Continuing with common security features, NordVPN and PIA use AES-256 encryption, the gold standard in the VPN industry. However, the default PIA setting with the OpenVPN protocol is 128-bit encryption, which is slightly weaker. Plus, both NordVPN and PIA share the same leak protection methods and RAM servers.
When I compared NordVPN to PIA, I noticed that NordVPN has 2 kill switches. One of them is an internet kill switch, found in many VPNs. Its function is to cut off the entire internet connection if the VPN connection drops unexpectedly. The second one works for apps and terminates previously selected applications if the internet connection is lost. This adds an extra layer of security and shows that NordVPN goes the extra mile to protect its customers and their privacy.
Privacy
One of the most important factors to consider when choosing a VPN service is their jurisdiction, i.e., country of origin. It influences what laws the provider must adhere to. NordVPN operates under the jurisdiction of Panama that doesn’t have any data retention laws.
Meanwhile, PIA is based in the USA, a founding member of the Five Eyes alliance. This is far from ideal because the country is known for its government collaborating with corporations to collect data about citizens. Plus, PIA was acquired by Kape Technologies, but it assured that privacy and security are still their number one priority. There’s no need to sound the alarm while there’s no substantial evidence of any wrongdoing.
NordVPN and Private Internet Access also guarantee privacy on a fundamental level, thanks to the complete utilization of RAM-only servers. In short, this hardware is incapable of storing any information long-term because it forgoes hard drives in favor of RAM modules, which are wiped clean once rebooted or unplugged. Finally, both VPNs support cryptocurrency payments for enhanced privacy. But keep in mind that this option usually doesn’t support refunds.
Logging
“Logging” refers to a VPN’s supposed practice of collecting customer activity logs. As you can imagine, many claim not to store anything, but it means nothing without third-party verification.
NordVPN conducted multiple (four at the time of writing) independent audits of its zero-logs policy, the latest two being in 2023 by Deloitte. Meanwhile, the first two were conducted by PwC. I examined the reports, and they all confirm NordVPN’s no-log policy.
Conversely, PIA’s no-logs claims were tested via conventional audits and real life. First, Deloitte conducted an independent audit in 2022. But before that, authorities tapped the provider on two occasions to hand over data about suspects in criminal investigations. Thankfully, PIA had no relevant information to provide, thus proving it doesn’t store activity logs.
PIA vs NordVPN feature comparison
All VPN service providers protect your online traffic and hide your real location. It’s features that differentiate them from one another. So I wanted to see what makes NordVPN and PIA differ and which one is better in this field.
Features | NordVPN | PIA |
Smart DNS | ✅SmartPlay | ✅Smart DNS |
Ad & malware blocker | ✅Threat Protection | ✅PIA MACE |
Split tunneling | ✅Yes | ✅Bypass VPN |
Specialized servers | ✅Yes | ❌No |
At first glance, NordVPN and Private Internet Access are on equal ground. Both offer the essentials for convenient video streaming, secure online browsing, and bypassing online censorship. However, the two include loads of other goodies that can swing the pendulum in either direction. Naturally, I’ll only overview the features that come packaged with the basic VPN subscription plan and none of the bonus perks.
Smart DNS
Smart DNS helps bypass geographical restrictions. The only downside is that you miss out on encryption and IP masking. Luckily, both NordVPN and PIA grant SmartDNS feature to please the immense number of content enthusiasts.
While PIA has only smart DNS, NordVPN finessed this feature in its SmartPlay. DNS rerouting and additional IP addresses improve connection when you try to access certain websites. It allows you to bypass censorship and get access to geo-restricted content as different Netflix libraries.
Ad & malware blocker
NordVPN, unlike PIA, offers a well-equipped Threat Protection tool. However, PIA has an alternative PIA MACE tool, which blocks malicious domains and ads without the need for browser extensions.
Such tools are necessary when the web is filled with various ads, nosy trackers, and debilitating malware. Secure VPN with the right tools blocks these nuisances and keeps you safe online.
That’s why NordVPN’s Threat Protection tool stands out from the competition because it will scan your downloaded files for malware while blocking ads and trackers in real time. Another excellent security perk is the Dark Web Monitor, which scours the net for leaks of your data.
Comparing ad & malware blocker capabilities, without a doubt, NordVPN takes first place.
Split tunneling
NordVPN and PIA both offer the split tunneling feature. The difference is that NordVPN grants this ability for Windows, Android, and Android TV devices, while PIA limits split tunneling to just desktop and Android devices. However, PIA has marginally better customization options and permits adding IP addresses into the mix.
Split tunneling allows you to segment your VPN connection on a per-app or per-website basis. It means that only specific information goes through a secure VPN tunnel, while other bypass it and connects directly to the internet.
Specialized servers
While NordVPN has a bunch of specialized servers in its pocket, PIA doesn’t split its server network into specialized categories. Instead, you have to enable MultiHop, obfuscation, and other perks in the settings menu.
The inclusion of specialized servers makes it easier for users to achieve certain goals, such as bypassing censorship or unlocking foreign content. Both NordVPN and PIA offer Double VPN, which strengthens the encryption with different exit and entry locations. Obfuscated servers help circumvent online censorship in restrictive networks, while P2P provides peak performance while downloading peer-to-peer files. Both service providers allow purchasing dedicated IPs so you can connect with exclusive IP addresses in your selected region. Finally, both NordVPN and PIA have Onion over VPN option, which provides extra security over your internet traffic.
Other features
Finally, each provider includes a few bonus features that deserve an honorary mention. For example, NordVPN has Meshnet, a SOCKS5 proxy, invisibility on LAN. Private Internet Access also adds a SOCKS5 proxy, plus Shadowsocks and port forwarding.
NordVPN vs Private Internet Access device compatibility
Both NordVPN and PIA have impressive selections of apps, browser extensions, and manual configuration options that are easy to set up for both newbies and VPN experts alike.
NordVPN | PIA | |
Major dedicated apps | Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android | Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android |
Other dedicated apps | Amazon Fire TV & Fire Stick, Android TV, Kodi add-on | Android TVs, Fire devices |
Browser extensions | Chrome (and other Chromium-based browsers), Firefox, Edge, Brave, Opera | Chrome (and other Chromium-based browsers), Firefox, Edge, Brave, Opera |
Manual setup | Routers, firewalls, NAS, Roku, Chromebook, gaming consoles | Routers, consoles, smart TVs |
Simultaneous devices | 10 | Unlimited |
The key difference is that one NordVPN account permits 10 simultaneous connections, while Private Internet Access doesn’t impose such limitations and gains a slight edge. On the other hand, they both work with major dedicated apps such as Windows, Mac, and Android. NordVPN and PIA are compatible with Android TVs and Amazon Fire devices, as well, so the only difference I could notice was the service providers’ performance. NordVPN was overall faster and provided better connectivity for these apps than PIA.
Desktop applications
After installing NordVPN on my computer, I noticed how neat and user-friendly the app’s interface is. The main focus is the world map in the center, where I could pick my desired connection spot. PIA’s app takes a mildly different approach and prioritizes minimalism. It starts with a small window where the ON button takes up most of the space. I must say, I’m not a fan of that. However, it’s expandable if you want to see more server options and information about the connection.
It was very easy to navigate NordVPN’s app. On the far left of the app, I found tabs for customizing all other options. For example, there are separate tabs for Threat Protection, Meshnet, Dark Web Monitor, general settings, and more. Ultimately, I think that the software is easy to use for newcomers and provides solid customization options for power users.
As for PIA, the settings menu is opened in a separate window for further customization. It includes tabs for controlling various details, such as protocols, split tunneling, privacy, etc. After using the app for a while, I thought that the interface and user experience could be better. Nevertheless, the app’s comprehensive feature set makes it a powerful tool to users who prefer control over their VPN settings.
Mobile applications
I immediately noticed a difference between NordVPN and PIA apps. NordVPN continues its map-loving trend on mobile devices and allows it to take up the majority of the screen. Meanwhile, on PIA, the ON button occupies half of the main screen, which I found annoying. If you’re like me and your VPN is always ON, that button has no purpose to be this big and in the center. Leave it to the widgets, as NordVPN does it perfectly.
Other than that, both apps have modern designs and are user-friendly. I slightly liked NordVPN’s design better as it was easy to expand a conventional menu with all countries listed in alphabetical order. Plus, the same menu helped me access specialty servers and search for servers via text. Other features like Meshnet, split tunneling, and Threat Protection Lite are tucked away in their own tabs below. For PIA, various settings are hidden behind the hamburger menu in the top left corner, and other options are below the ON button. Personally, I like it when the features are easily accessible, and I don’t have to spend a lot of time navigating them, so I enjoyed using the NordVPN app much more.
Are NordVPN and PIA working in China?
When it comes to overcoming internet censorship in strict regions like China and Russia, NordVPN is a better choice than PIA. NordVPN’s obfuscated servers are specifically designed to bypass geographical restrictions and strong firewalls, such as the Great Firewall of China. Plus, they hide the fact that you’re using a VPN at all, making it harder for the Chinese Government to catch you.
NordVPN | PIA | |
Works in China | ✅Yes | ✅Yes |
Stealth VPN | ✅Obfuscated servers | ✅Shadowsocks |
Tor over VPN | ✅Onion over VPN | ❌No |
Censorship-heavy countries use DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) technology to detect and limit virtual private networks. To combat this, you need exceptional features for bypassing VPN blocks, commonly referred to as Stealth VPN. NordVPN has two such features – obfuscated and Onion over VPN servers. Private Internet Access grants a Shadowsocks proxy, which is adequate but not as reliable.
Additionally, NordVPN is the best VPN for China because it has more server locations in Asia than PIA. This means that Chinese citizens can easily find servers in neighboring countries, such as Hong Kong, Japan, or Mongolia. While PIA has servers in Asia, all of them are virtual. This has a slight downside because physical servers can be more stable and faster. So, if you want a reliable service that works constantly, NordVPN for China is a good pick.
Customer support
If you ever need to contact customer support, both NordVPN and PIA provide excellent options, such as 24/7 live chat, email, guides, and informative FAQs. Since both providers differ little in this area, I tested the effectiveness of their customer support firsthand.
NordVPN | PIA | |
24/7 live chat | ✅Yes | ✅Yes |
Phone Line | ❌No | ❌No |
✅Yes | ✅Yes | |
Knowledgebase | ✅Yes | ✅Yes |
FAQs | ✅Yes | ✅Yes |
I found NordVPN FAQs and knowledgbase very informative, covering all the common questions that can arise for a new customer. The layout and navigation were slightly better and more intuitive than on PIA’s page.
The live chat option was also more pleasant with NordVPN than with PIA. I asked how to connect my smart TV to their VPN, and their answer was fast, informative, and polite. Meanwhile, with PIA, the response times were inconsistent. Some inquiries were resolved immediately, while for others, I had to wait. Also, they didn’t want to disclose the server number. However, they explained that new servers are added and old ones are removed constantly, so the number is ever-changing.
In the end, I was more satisfied with NordVPN’s communication and customer service.

NordVPN vs PIA: Reddit users’ opinion
Potential customers frequently visit Reddit to get some unbiased feedback before purchasing items or services. I also looked into the comments and threads, searching for the Reddit users’ opinions on NordVPN and PIA.
Unsurprisingly, I was able to find fans of either service on the website. While people don’t necessarily compare NordVPN to Private Internet Access, I noticed differences in their comments. NordVPN users stress the service provider’s consistency, reliability, and speed, reminding others that it’s as good as advertised. Meanwhile, PIA customers stay loyal for a long period of time despite PIA not being as popular as other VPNs recommended by Reddit.
Final verdict: Which is better, NordVPN or Private Internet Access?
It’s obvious that NordVPN and Private Internet Access are well-rounded premium VPN service providers. While they each have strengths and weaknesses that set them apart, similarities make the choice less drastic and, to some, more complicated. PIA’s cheaper subscription can attract many users, but if you care about speeds, server locations, robust features, and better streaming capabilities, I recommend choosing NordVPN.

After conducting numerous tests and careful comparisons, NordVPN stood out as the better option than PIA. Even though it costs slightly more than the opponent, the service goes above and beyond regarding digital security, content unblocking, and connection performance.
Private Internet Access can still be a valid choice for those on a budget but seeking a premium service. Overall, it all depends on what you need and how much you’re willing to spend.
