Celo VPN review
Safe, secure and anonymous is their catchphrase, and these are features that they have been able to achieve in some measure. We will explore further in our Celo VPN review.
In this Celo VPN review, we will look at what the service offers and if you should start using it. Celo VPN is owned by Celo Net Pty Ltd. They are based in Australia and have only 18 servers in 12 different countries.
With Celo VPN, you can choose from the list of common security protocols such as OpenVPN, SSTP, or L2TP/IPSec. In addition to their VPN service, Celo offers DDoS protection.
One thing that impresses us about Celo VPN is their website (celo.net). It is easy to navigate, has a nice, clean layout and a very extensive FAQ. This section has guides on manually installing VPNs on almost any device you can think of. There are also articles on general topics about VPNs as a whole.
Celo VPN’s support team can be contacted via live chat, email, and social media. Celo VPN has extra features available for members, some of which are SOCKS5 & SHADOWSOCKS, support for an ad/malware blocker, unlimited downloads, support for TOR, obfuscated SSH Tunnel, port forward, and dedicated hardware.
From our Celo VPN review, we can say it is good for personal use, especially for those who only do light browsing. But there are several issues that still need to be addressed, so read on to know more.
Is Celo VPN safe to use?
Celo VPN makes use of industry-standard AES 256-bit encryption, which is suitable for any type of device, be it an 8-bit device or large-scale machines.
To allow greater flexibility to its users, it supports three types of tunneling protocols. These protocols are OpenVPN, SSTP, and L2TP/IPSec.
Our tests of this VPN revealed there were no IP or DNS leaks. So we can say that overall, their security is quite solid.
In terms of privacy, Celo VPN doesn’t collect browsing logs, but they keep data such as your payment info and email. Australia is also part of the Five-Eyes surveillance network, which might be an issue for some.
How to download and install Celo VPN
To download the Celo VPN client for the Windows platform, you will need to first create an account on the website so as to get a login credential.
You will then be sent a link to download the client application. After downloading, run the celovpn.exe file. Then, you will be asked to choose an installation location, and after choosing one, click “Install.”
After installing, enter in your login credentials. Once you have successfully logged in, right-click on the flag icon (Server/Location Name) to choose a server and port.
After selecting a server and port, click “Connect.” If the Celo globe icon in your taskbar changes to green, you’re connected.
To get maximum speed, make sure to connect to the nearest server.
Apps and extensions
Celo VPN has a client for different operating systems such as Windows, Mac, ChromeOS, and Linux.
Celo VPN is also compatible with mobile devices operating on Android and iOS. You can use up to six devices with Celo VPN with a subscription.
You can also configure this VPN on Kodi and your router. Celo VPN on routers helps to increase the connection limit as you can connect several devices to the router, and still be protected.
One additional bonus with we found in conducting this Celo VPN review is that it supports the TOR browser; that’s great news for TOR fans!
Speed & performance
Using a VPN service will definitely affect the speed of your connection. However, many VPNs are using sophisticated technology to increase connection speed. We were at pains to test all the servers on CeloVPN and found out that sadly, most of the servers were pretty slow.
This is due to the location of the servers used by the service, and a really limited number as well – 18 servers in 12 countries? These are rookie numbers.
Celo VPN for Netflix and torrenting
VPNs do not just safeguard you as you surf the net – with a VPN, you can access restricted content such as the highly sought after US Netflix library.
In the past, none of Celo VPN servers could stream videos on Netflix, but since then they have added the much-needed support and now can stream videos from UK and US regions.
In addition, Celo VPN provides Peer-to-Peer (P2P) connections for torrenting activities.
Torrenting is one of the best ways to perfectly share large files. Contrary to popular opinion, torrenting is not illegal, but it becomes a crime if you share files without the proper permission.
Please make sure you read Celo VPN’s information on torrenting the right way.
Does CeloVPN work in China?
China and some other countries have restricted internet usage to curb the influence it has on their citizens. Unfortunately, this restriction covers both native and visiting residents in China.
Celo VPN has the necessary technology to unblock internet usage. However, we cannot guarantee if it will work since there are no Chinese user reports about CeloVPN. The only way to know is if we actually go there and test it out.
Pricing
Celo VPN offers four different payment plans. The first plan is a monthly plan, which costs $7.00 per month. They also offer a 3-month subscription, which costs $6.00/month. And there is the 6-month subscription costing $5.83/month. Meanwhile, the annual plan is set at $5.50/month.
With a paid plan, you can connect a respectable six devices at a time. Celo VPN offers no free trial, but there is a 10-day money-back guarantee option available.
All plans give users complete access to all Celo VPN features. Celo VPN offers various payment methods such as Credit Card, Payza, Bitcoin & other cryptocurrencies, PayPal, and PayPal Express.
Customer support
The Celo VPN Customer Support can be contacted through email and social media. They also have a live chat section, but it is only available during work hours.
Response to emails is a bit slow, as is the live chat.
At least their FAQ section is detailed, and will most likely give you an answer to most questions you have.
Bottom line
All things considered, we probably would not recommend Celo VPN.
Although their security protocols are up-to-date, there appears to be no logging, and you have third-party payment options, they are based in a Five-Eyes country. But if that’s not of concern to you, then you can try them out.
We like their range of compatibility with many platforms, the TOR browser, and Netflix support is a big plus. User experience in terms of the app and website was painless.
Torrenting may be supported, but with limited servers and the slow, slow speeds, it’s a little fruitless to torrent. Plus, we can’t get onto Netflix, and customer support is below average. For the price, you can probably get a better deal elsewhere.
