Easy VPN review
Easy VPN is no longer active. We recommend checking our best VPN services in 2024 instead.
Easy VPN is a quick and easy solution for on-the-go protection and unblocking restricted websites on Android. The free service acts as an encouragement to subscribe and, based in Hong Kong, offers under-the-radar encryption and digital freedom.
It’s not as transparent and stringent as some of the best overall VPNs, but you usually expect an open market free VPN – like Easy VPN – to be making its money “under the table” by collecting and selling your information. That does not seem to be the case here.
Easy VPN is no longer active. We recommend checking our best VPN services in 2024 or go with the best option: NordVPN instead.
Apps and extensions
This Android-only VPN is available on Android devices.
For Kodi users, however, it does mean that you can run Easy VPN on your mobile phone and use it to unblock your internet connection and use Kodi add-ons and repositories that you might have previously been unable to access.
Easy VPN for Netflix
VPN users usually look to free their account from geo-restriction to access the US Netflix, where choices are greater, and a lot of the rights to movies and films originate from.
Usually, you’ll find that Netflix is blocking your VPN.
Yes, Netflix has a blanket ban on proxies, unblockers, and VPNs, which it deploys with stealthy regularity and intensity. You might’ve gotten a message that points out when you seem to be using an unblocker or proxy. “Please turn off any of these services and try again,” the pop-up says, and the video never loads.
Luckily, this isn’t a problem we faced with Easy VPN, which is surprising since some of the best VPNs out there fight to dedicate and change servers to keep Netflix access unrestricted.
With over five servers available in the US at the time of writing on Easy VPN, we only had to switch from one to the other to get Netflix up and running (and even the first one only returned an unspecified error and told us to try again, but no mention of a VPN).
However, if you’re on the unaltered free plan, Easy VPN’s daily limit of 500 MB might not suit you for streaming, as an episode or two (at most) of a simple sitcom can eat that up quickly.
Easy VPN for torrenting
There are all sorts of torrent clients out there, and even for mobile phones (Android started this thing, and you can find some of the best ones on Windows phones too).
To that end, Easy VPN’s security has shown itself to be robust, changing IP addresses without any significant loss in speed. This makes it good for torrenting – especially since you might not be running torrents too heavy on your smartphone.
If you are, however, be advised about the daily limit, just like with Netflix. If you go down to the Pricing section, however, we’ll tell you about some creative options you can employ to get an increase in data.
Is it good for users in China?
As mentioned before, the ShadowSocks proxy originated in and is for use in China to bypass the authorities’ bans on VPNs, which is in turn because of their ban on a wide range of websites and social mediate networks in lieu of censorship.
ShadowSocks is an open-source proxy as well, which means changes can be made to it if changes are made to the structure of the internet in China. ShadowSocks is widespread and uses SOCKS5 in a unique way on each setup to make it flexible.
A word of caution, however, is that ShadowSocks can only partially encrypt your data. If the connection is tracked from the get-go, it might be easier to breach your data.
For this reason (and others you might understand better for yourself) it’s probably better to recognize for yourself how far Easy VPN, or another similar service, can go in protecting your freedom of speech. Unless you’re paying for a VPN that’s fully dedicated to protecting dissent, especially in a political context, it’s best not to risk it.
Support
Easy VPN offers a unique system of live support; a number that you can send a WhatsApp message directly to (in addition to an email address). We got a reply quickly despite perceived time differences, and questions were answered swiftly.
Pricing
Easy VPN is essentially free to use but comes with a daily bandwidth limit of 500MB.
To get more data for free, you can either use a “check-in” system wherein you build up a usage profile over a couple of days, your free data increasing daily (100 MB the first day, 110 the next, and so on). You can also invite friends and get 256 MB for each friend that signs up using your referral code, generated in-app. Your friends will also get the same amount of free data using your code.
The paid premium plan also has reasonable prices.
The cheapest of their plans is 20 dollars for the whole year (coming out to almost $1.66/month per month), whereas paying monthly would require you to pay $3.00/month.
There’s also a weekly plan, which might be suitable for people with needs of a shorter term, priced at $1.
Bottom line
A dollar a week for a VPN such as this with 20 servers on all different continents and a unique combination of ShadowSocks and OpenVPN protocols being offered is not a bad deal, especially considering that you get the same protection and speed for free with a daily data limit. The yearly plan, if you like the service, is also much more reasonable than most VPNs of the same capability.
But in the end, Easy VPN is nowhere near the best VPNs, such as NordVPN (now 74% off) which we recommend if you value your privacy.
