Identity Cloaker Review

Identity Cloaker is an old-looking, but still a viable piece of software for securing your online presence. But when it comes to choosing the right VPN provider, be sure to check all the best ones first before committing.

With a history dating as far back as 2007, Identity Cloaker still looks and works like a piece of software stuck in the previous decade.

Identity Cloaker is a Czech-based “Internet Privacy Protection Service” with a mission to “protect you from Internet spies and prying eyes!” Although the app looks like a relic from the previous decade, it gets the job done and is a decent contender against many modern VPN apps.

Now, let’s take a closer look at how Identity Cloaker performs.

Identity Cloaker does not offer the best performance. If you want excellent speeds, check our Fastest VPNs list. According to our tests, the fastest VPN is NordVPN, currently 74% off!

NordVPN is our top-rated VPN provider, known for unparalleled protection, the fastest speeds, and global coverage.

Security and privacy

Security-wise, Identity Cloaker offers the following feature package:

  • Military-grade Rijndael AES-256 encryption cipher
  • SSH tunneling
  • OpenVPN and L2TP over IPSec protocols
  • Kill switch

These security credentials are enough for more than just basic browsing – the SSH tunneling feature also allows users to bypass censorship tools employed by countries that heavily restrict online freedoms. On top of that, Identity Cloaker’s encryption and protocol selection are on par with what the best products on the market have to offer, while the kill switch feature will block your web traffic in case your VPN connection drops.

Furthermore, the VPN can be configured on third-party software and doesn’t necessarily need the Identity Cloaker app to work. Plus, you can also configure your DD-WRT router with this VPN to secure your entire network.

Does Identity Cloaker log your data?

Short answer: some.

Although Identity Cloaker promotes itself as a “no logs” VPN on its official website, it’s not exactly a zero-logs service. As stated in its Privacy Policy, the app collects the following information:

  • Name
  • Contact information including email address
  • Demographic information such as preferences and interests
  • Other information relevant to customer surveys and/or offers

Even if we take into account the fact that Identity Cloaker is based in the Czech Republic, which isn’t a member of any surveillance group, collecting personally identifiable information like your name and email address could raise alarm bells for hardline online privacy proponents.

Speed and performance

Since it lacks the WireGuard tunneling protocol, Identity Cloaker can’t be considered a really fast VPN. Still, with the OpenVPN protocol, the connection speeds are good enough for most use-cases. Your mileage may vary, but you shouldn’t notice any drastic speed reductions when using this VPN.

Server coverage

At the moment, Identity Cloaker operates 34 servers in 18 countries and offers a total of 534 unique IP addresses. Available countries include the US, UK, France, Germany, Canada, Australia, Singapore, and even Russia.

Compared to the largest players of the VPN industry, Identity Cloaker’s server fleet is comparatively tiny. With 500+ IP addresses to choose from, this selection is highly limited and thus might be very susceptible to blocking by streaming platforms.

Ease of use and multi-platform support

The Identity Cloaker app is available on the four most commonly used platforms:

  • Windows
  • macOS
  • iOS
  • Android (pre-release version)

While the dated interface looks like a blast from the distant past, the app itself is quite straightforward and easy to use. What’s more, there’s also a portable version of the app that can be used in case the default application does not work. Luckily, the regular application worked just fine for me.

Identity Cloaker main window

Options-wise, Identity Cloaker is pretty customizable – you can toggle the kill switch feature, swap between different encryption modes (or turn off encryption entirely), or even make it play a sound in case of a connection failure, with plenty more options available to dedicated VPN geeks.

Identity Cloaker settings

Overall, Identity Cloaker is certainly not a looker, but it’s enough to get the job done. At least if the job is to secure your web traffic without getting a headache.

Unblocking Netflix and other streaming platforms

When it comes to accessing geo-blocked streaming services, Identity Cloaker is only mildly successful.

The good news: Identity Cloaker can unblock Netflix.

Unfortunately, our efforts to access other streaming platforms like Hulu, Amazon Prime, and HBO Go from Europe didn’t result in much success either. So if unblocking content from various streaming platforms is a priority for you we’d recommend choosing a different VPN.

P2P and torrenting

Identity Cloaker allows torrenting on the majority of its servers, except those located in the US, UK, and France. That being said, the transfer of copyrighted materials is prohibited. At least the download speeds are good enough while partaking in P2P activities.

Online censorship in China and elsewhere

Theoretically speaking, Identity Cloaker can be an acceptable solution for bypassing VPN blocking techniques, such as China’s Deep Packet Inspection. The SSH tunneling feature paired with the L2TP over IPSec protocol will help mask your VPN connection as regular HTTPS traffic, giving you access to the unrestricted version on the web.

Furthermore, Identity Cloaker has customers from over 190 countries, including China, Cuba, and Saudi Arabia. This means that the VPN works quite well at getting around a wide variety of online restrictions. Plus, global performance is relatively good too.

Customer support

In terms of customer support, Identity Cloaker offers a relatively modest array of options:

  • Email support
  • FAQ section
  • Support ticketing system
  • Knowledge base

After looking over Identity Cloaker’s outdated knowledge base (where the last official post dates back to 2011) and surprisingly barebones FAQ sections, we can confidently conclude that your best bet at getting help is to submit a ticket to the support team.

While the lack of live chat service is quite disappointing, our guess is that this is due to Identity Cloaker being a small and relatively obscure VPN provider. Nonetheless, customer support is another area with a noticeable need for improvement.

Pricing

Identity Cloaker offers the following subscription plans to its potential customers:

  • 10-day trial for $5.57
  • 1-month plan for $14.54/month
  • 3-month plan for $11.20/month
  • 6-month plan for $9.33/month
  • 12-month plan for $7.47/month
Identity Cloaker pricing

Payment methods include credit cards and PayPal with no anonymous payment methods available. Additionally, subscribers can connect an unlimited number of devices simultaneously with their Identity Cloaker account.

Cost-wise, Identity Cloaker is a fairly expensive service considering its small number of features. With dozens of better products with far smaller price tags on the market, it’s hard to recommend Identity Cloaker to any price-conscious user.

That said, those willing to give it a spin can make use of the paid 10-day trial and a 14-day money-back guarantee.

Bottom line

Identity Cloaker is a good choice for those who are looking for retro-looking VPN software with adequate security features. Furthermore, it’s quite customizable and offers a fair number of settings to tweak. However, it’s not ideal at getting around the geographical restrictions of streaming services.

Device support is also not great, but at least it’s possible to manually configure devices that do not have dedicated apps. Overall, Identity Cloaker has some catching up to do before it can compete against the best VPN services, but it can certainly find a niche for itself.
