RapidVPN Review

While RapidVPN  is good, there are quite a few services that are widely considered as the best overall.

Rather than try and stand out by claiming to have better security and better features, RapidVPN takes a different path altogether and tries to have an extremely niche yet customizable service that a lot of users, as well as corporations, could benefit from.

RapidVPN is not your everyday VPN. You immediately notice this as soon as you try and pick out a plan for yourself. Their plans range from the standard VPN connection (that you would find in most VPNs) to the very extreme where they offer lifetime subscriptions to their users for a one-time fee.

RapidVPN does seem to have its fair share of problems, not the least of which is the low server count. However, it does try to embrace as much honesty as possible by fully guiding their users through each plan and giving them a lot of control over how they can customize RapidVPN to their liking.

While it is easy to see that RapidVPN is probably not built for the singular user and instead targets corporations, a lot of single users still enjoy the service due to the quality and trust that the VPN world has for RapidVPN.

So, if you have some money to burn and want to invest in a long-term VPN, read our review to find out whether or not RapidVPN fits your needs.

If you are searching for a cheaper option that boasts 5500+ ultra-fast servers in 59 countries all around the world, try NordVPN.

Is RapidVPN safe to use?

At first, RapidVPN does not make a strong showing in terms of security. The encryption used by the VPN provider is 128 bit and not 256 as is the industry standard. The main problem with 128-bit encryption is that it is much easier to crack and not something that should be a part of a security suite.

Despite this, the guys over at RapidVPN do take your privacy seriously. There is no registration process, which means you do not need to provide any details on your end. On top of that, it seems like RapidVPN does not actually keep any user-logs apart from the standard usage statistics kept by most VPNs.

If you are still worried about your data being logged, then take a look at their Privacy Policy which outlines in a lot of detail just how much of your data is being used by someone else.

You get access to all the standard protocols that you will find in other VPNs too. Not only can you use the very secure OpenVPN protocol, but you also have access to PPTP, L2TP, SSTP, and SoftEther. These protocols are a great combination as they can allow you to enjoy good speeds while at the same time access the entire uncensored version of the internet.

Our tests with RapidVPN found no evidence of DNS or IP leaks. Even then, RapidVPN developers created a guide on how to fix the DNS leak yourself. And that’s not all: RapidVPN also has a client-side kill switch to protect any loss of anonymity in case there is a sudden disconnection from a VPN.

Overall, we found RapidVPN to be very secure apart from the sub-standard encryption it uses.

Speed and performance

The company has a total of only 18 different server locations, and all of them are located either in Europe or North America. Nonetheless, these servers are dedicated and used only to power RapidVPN.

During our tests, we connected to various servers in both Europe and the US. The ping was noticeably higher due to the distance between the two locations, but the speed was almost exactly the same.

While some companies may want to serve as many customers as they want by expanding into newer regions, RapidVPN wants to make sure the quality of their service is as good as ever before they move on with another project. The dedicated servers work flawlessly and we did not experience any shutdowns or loss of connection.

How to download RapidVPN

RapidVPN is installed in pretty much the same way as other VPNs in the market.

  1. Go to their website and select a plan.
  2. Once the payment is made, download the app or apps for your platform.
  3. Log in with your credentials and begin using RapidVPN.

Apps and extensions

RapidVPN works on almost every single platform you can imagine. Not only do they have custom applications for all the mainstream devices such as Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android, but they also have applications available for Linux (Ubuntu, Fedora, and Mint) along with a total of 8 different router brands.

Lastly, you can also find a RapidVPN application for your Chromebook, your Windows Phone, and Kindle Fire. In summary, RapidVPN can be used to protect pretty much every single device in your home as well as your office.

RapidVPN for Netflix

RapidVPN works quite well on Netflix. In fact, you can get a dedicated IP through the service and it will unblock pretty much every geo-blocked service there is.

During our tests, we found that Netflix worked quite well. On certain servers, there was quite a huge reduction in speed. Because of that, we couldn’t stream in 4K (UHD), but most servers worked flawlessly.

Although you could be better off for Netflix if you purchase NordVPN, RapidVPN will still be a decent choice for those who want a dedicated IP for themselves.

RapidVPN for torrenting

RapidVPN has a total of 3 servers in Europe through which you can torrent. As long as you are connected to Switzerland, Netherlands, or Sweden, you will be allowed to torrent as much as you want.

To torrent, you can either purchase a dynamic VPN which has access to all locations or use a static IP which uses one of the three aforementioned locations. Personally, we recommend using the dynamic IP package for torrenting to be on the safe side.

When it comes to speeds, we found RapidVPN to be good, but not great. There was some drop-off in speed when connected through Switzerland but not particularly more than we found in other VPNs.

Does RapidVPN work in China?

Yes, you can use the SoftEther protocol to connect to RapidVPN when in China and enjoy a completely uncensored internet experience. You can also use some of the other protocols such as PPTP, but they are not recommended since it is very easy for someone to spy on you when you use them.

When connected from China, the speeds do tend to take a fair hit due to the servers being so far away from the country. For this reason, users in China who have no need for a static IP and just want to browse the internet might be better off with another VPN like NordVPN.

Support

There is no live chat feature, but we found their support to be available 24 hours a day, and they got back to us within an hour.

The support staff seemed to have all the details about the service and were able to answer all of our technical questions in an accurate and timely manner.

We also found no FAQ page, and it was difficult to ascertain a lot of information about the product. However, the support was once again able to help us with everything that we needed.

Pricing

As you can see here, there are a lot of plans for you to choose from:

  • Static IP in the US with 12 servers to choose from starting at $7.90/month
  • Static IP in Canada hosted in Montreal for $13.90/month
  • Static IP in Europe with 6 servers to choose from starting at $5.90/month
  • Dynamic VPN with 17 different locations starting from $7.20/month
  • P2P enabled VPN with 2 locations to choose from starting at $5.90/month
  • Lifetime VPN subscription with a fresh dedicated IP starting at $244.00/month

You can further save money on all of these plans (except the Lifetime one) if you pay for multiple months at the same time.

RapidVPN has 5 payment methods: PayPal, credit card, cryptocurrency, PerfectMoney, and WebMoney.

Overall, RapidVPN is priced quite fairly as far as its dedicated IP plans go. However, if you are thinking of subscribing to their Dynamic VPN service, we recommend taking a look at PrivateVPN instead.

Bottom line

RapidVPN is a good VPN in its particular niche. If you want a dedicated IP which has never been used by anyone before, then RapidVPN is a good choice for you. If you want a VPN that works for the rest of your life, then RapidVPN is a good choice for you.

However, there are also a lot of problems in the service, such as the extremely low number of servers that you can access. If you are someone who wants to primarily use a VPN for streaming, torrenting, and entertainment, we recommend looking at other VPNs.
