My VPN Unlimited review takes a closer look at his service from the US-based KeepSolid Inc. It’s a strong tool that delivers on many fronts. Yet, the devil is always in the details because VPNs tend to vary quite a bit.

Here are some of the most important questions that I try to answer in this review:

Before you start reading the KeepSolid VPN review, I have to warn you that this service is good but not great. It means that you can get a better option for a similar price that’s faster, offers more privacy, and includes more features. On the other hand, if you use a VPN only occasionally, VPN Unlimited might be more than enough and if not, you can always try best VPN on our list – NordVPN.

VPN Unlimited speed and servers

Speed is one of the most important points that I want to cover in this review. After all, it determines how good this service is for streaming, P2P file sharing, or gaming.

Furthermore, the server list no less important – if you have to connect to an overloaded server in another continent, both latency and speed will probably disappoint. As for the VPN Unlimited servers, the spread and global coverage are decent.

KeepSolid VPN Unlimited speed can be very good, provided that you use the WireGuard protocol. I didn’t experience slow-downs even when choosing servers on the other side of the globe.

Speed test results of VPN Unlimited

The number of servers and locations is only part of the equation when it comes to connection speed. To avoid ambiguity, I ran some speed tests while connected to servers in several locations around the world.

Speeds can vary greatly between the servers, so make sure you try a few when you need maximum performance.

For reference, my baseline speeds were as follows:

Then, I launched VPN Unlimited and chose the WireGuard tunneling protocol. This is what I got across multiple locations:

United Kingdom

• Download: 94 Mbps (71% drop-off)
• Upload: 70 Mbps (77% drop-off)

United States

• Download: 158 Mbps (49% drop-off)
• Upload: 83 Mbps (73% drop-off)

• Download: 146 Mbps (53% drop-off)

These numbers are easily good enough for torrenting, gaming, and HD or even 4K streaming. However, that comes with a couple of caveats:

• When considering the speed of a VPN, you should think in the drop-off percentages. For example, my base download speed is approximately 300 Mbps, and I got about 150 Mbps in the US. Therefore, you can expect to have about 50% of your speed.
• Going further away from your actual location generally decreases the download and upload speed. In my scenario, this proved to be untrue because my UK results were the worst. However, this might be due to server load and many other external factors.

VPN Unlimited server list

Despite some reviews claiming the service has over 1,000 servers, the official website is adamantly claiming the actual numbers to be 3000+ servers in 55+ countries.

While the spread is very decent, the sheer number of servers doesn’t look that impressive. However, as my VPN Unlimited speed test has shown, the quality is more important than the quantity. I found only several countries where the server load was marked in yellow instead of green.

Users should be able to find a nearby server in most regions. Perhaps the only real exception to this is Central Africa because the only servers on this continent are in Libya and South Africa. On the other hand, many top-ranked services will give you a similar selection.

The pricing subscription options offered by VPN Unlimited very flexible but also a bit confusing, especially for novice users. Here are the pricing plans and current deals:

However, I must give a separate VPN Unlimited lifetime subscription review. At the time of writing this article, getting the discounted 5-device version was a no brainer. But if you missed the special deal train, I recommend testing the service first before committing, even though the regular prices are good too. Most importantly, don’t forget that they don’t mean your lifetime when they say that.

VPN Unlimited privacy and security

I have almost nothing bad to say about KeepSolid VPN’s security. It uses military-grade encryption and the latest tunneling protocols that include a stealth mode in KeepSolid Wise. Furthermore, it doesn’t have any leaks and offers a kill switch on all main platforms.

Unfortunately, this service has some glaring privacy issues. To start with, VPN Unlimited logs user data that can be linked with the particular session. Even more, KeepSolid is based in the US, which is one of the worst places on Earth for staying anonymous.

Encryption and tunneling protocols

VPN Unlimited tool has solid security fundamentals that cover all the bases. This includes:

• Modern tunneling protocols: WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2, KeepSolid Wise (Stealth VPN)
• Unbreakable encryption ciphers: AES-256, Camellia-256, ChaCha20/Poly1305

The encryption method depends on the chosen protocol. I recommend going with WireGuard because it’s not only the fastest but also the most secure option at the moment. However, if you find yourself in a country where VPNs are illegal, or their traffic is blocked by the government, your best bet is the KeepSolid Wise protocol.

While many VPNs still offer outdated L2TP/IPSec or PPTP options, VPN Unlimited has ditched them for the sake of users’ security.

IP and DNS leak protection

KeepSolid VPN does a solid job at protecting you from various leaks. After all, if your IP address and location are visible even when the service is on, what’s the point of using it in the first place?

I ran multiple tests from Europe while connected to a French server and found that it doesn’t have IP, DNS, or WebRTC leaks. In other words, you can feel safe when using VPN Unlimited to protect yourself online.

Does VPN Unlimited keep logs?

The short answer is “Yes”

VPN Unlimited logging is a fact. And it turns out that they’re collecting quite a lot of data. According to KeepSolid privacy policy and VPN-specific Data Usage Regulations, the retained information is:

• Email (for account ID)
• Device name, code, and the number of connected devices (to enforce simultaneous connection limits)
• Social media information (if the user agrees to provide it)
• Time zone and wifi network name (if you add it to Trusted Networks)
• The total amount of web traffic for each session and session dates (if you use personal servers or a personal IP address)

KeepSolid “may also collect personal data, such as names and contact information, from third parties, such as marketing, research, sales lead generator companies, social networks, as well as from any publicly-accessible sources.”

The data collected is used for improving services and marketing practices, detecting and preventing fraud, illegal activity, and any other activity that infringes upon the legal rights of KeepSolid, our other users, or other third parties.

The bright spot in VPN Unlimited Privacy Policy is not monitoring, storing, or logging your internet activities, although users should be aware of the exception for traffic and session timestamps. Unfortunately, while your session is active, all automatically collected data listed above can be linked with the session.

VPN Unlimited location – US

Going deeper into the privacy topic, I found that KeepSolid, the company behind VPN Unlimited, is based in New York, which immediately raises some concerns. The US is one of the least privacy-friendly jurisdictions.

Firstly, it’s one of the founders of the international surveillance alliance known as the Five Eyes. Secondly, US law enforcement and intelligence agencies have a lot of power in getting the information they need from businesses (such as Facebook or Google).

Combine this with the fact that it logs your data, and you can clearly see why the users of this service might struggle to stay anonymous. I wouldn’t recommend KeepSolid VPN to journalists, political activists, or spies for that matter.

Is VPN Unlimited safe?

This VPN tool has strong security features that cover all the bases. Those include solid tunneling protocols, military-grade encryption, leak protection, and a kill switch. However, the latter works on Apple products only if you use the IKEv2 protocol. Also, more advanced users might miss Double VPN (multi-hop) or Tor over VPN.

Unfortunately, the main concerns are with privacy. To begin with, the privacy policy clearly states that logging various user data is a common practice. If that wasn’t enough, the US jurisdiction and its surveillance history make things even worse.

To sum up, I declare that VPN Unlimited is not safe, at least until it overhauls its privacy policy and brings in a third-party to do an independent audit.

Does VPN Unlimited support my device?

As I have already mentioned in my review, this service has clients working for the most popular platforms (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS). What’s more, you can install VPN Unlimited apps on Amazon Fire TV & FireStick, provided that you have a 2nd gen device or newer.

You can also manually configure it on Apple TV via AirPlay, Kodi, routers, and NAS. If you set it up on your home router, KeepSolid VPN can also protect Roku and Chromecast.

Finally, you can install browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Edge.

All clients are quite minimalistic and easy to use with very limited security and privacy customization options. So beginners may be glad to have such a user-friendly VPN app. On the other hand, advanced users may find it lacking important features.

VPN Unlimited app review: Windows, macOS, and Linux

On the main dashboard, you can find a world map with your true IP address, and physical location displayed. If you are connected to a VPN server, you can see your virtual IP and spoofed location shown as well.

The world map shows all server locations and gives you an option to click on the desired one. Alternatively, you can pick Optimal or any other location from the drop-down list below.

VPN Unlimited servers are sorted into four tabs: Favorites, All servers, Torrent, and Streaming. The active tab is the Recommend servers tab by default.

Here you can also see the connection quality for each location, displayed in bars on the right. By clicking the blue button in the top-left corner, you can also run a Ping Test. It will show the latency in milliseconds next to every city.

As mentioned earlier, VPN Unlimited apps lack settings. You can clearly see that in the Windows and macOS version comparison below. The Kill Switch works on Mac only with the IKEv2 protocol.

While the PC users can at least toggle a few things, such as Stop DNS Leak or trusted networks, the VPN Unlimited for Mac gives only DNS Firewall. The latter can be customized to block only particular content, such as gambling or fake news. You can also add any domain you like, including all its subdomains.

Finally, when it comes to Linux, KeepSolid VPN is one of the few providers that offer a graphic interface. Once again, this service proves its user-friendliness, even on non-mainstream platforms. You can download the VPN Unlimited apps for 64-bit Debian and Ubuntu distributions.

VPN Unlimited app review: Android and iOS

The mobile apps of VPN Unlimited look virtually the same as the desktop counterparts. I liked that they show the server load in percentages, not bars. Also, the iOS version has a nice Dark Theme but lacks Torrenting servers. Other than that, the differences are negligible.

But what about the differences between the Android and the iOS apps? Once again, it’s the number of available features.

The Android app has a kill switch, network whitelister, DNS Firewall, and split tunneling (App Exceptions), which is unavailable on any other client.

In the meantime, iOS users get only Trusted Networks and DNS Firewall, which is still two times more than what’s available on Mac. And if you want to use the kill switch (you should), you can do that only with the IKEv2 protocol.

VPN Unlimited browser extensions: Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Edge

VPN Unlimited has browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Edge. This is a pretty wide selection, considering that KeepSolid products are not among the most popular. However, two good browser add-ons are better than four mediocre ones.

The Chrome version has more than 100,000 downloads but has been updated in early 2020. It offers the same server list but sans Torrenting. You can toggle WebRTC protection, which is turn on by default, and switch to KeepSolid Wise stealth protocol.

VPN Unlimited browser extensions also unblocked Netflix and the BBC iPlayer, which is not that common even among the higher-rated providers.

I could not find the Opera extension on their store, and the VPN Unlimited website offered to download a bunch of files without giving any instructions on where to put them.

Streaming with VPN Unlimited

It is a good choice for streaming content on Netflix US, BBC iPlayer, and other platforms. What’s more, it works with Kodi and has an app for Amazon Fire devices.

Unfortunately, you have to pay extra for the Smart DNS feature, which unlocks the content and doesn’t encrypt your traffic. While the price is reasonable ($1.67/month for the annual plan), the VPN itself is not among the cheapest. What’s more, VPN Unlimited says nothing about supporting smart TVs or game consoles.

Netflix

While not on our list of best services for streaming, VPN Unlimited unblocks Netflix in multiple countries. Those include the US, the UK, the Netherlands, and Japan. You don’t even have to use the app as a browser extension is enough.

If you have a decent internet connection, choosing the WireGuard protocol will let you watch movies and TV shows in HD or even UHD (4K) video quality. Of course, when possible, you should also choose the closest server because KeepSolid VPN might unblock content even if you don’t use the streaming option.

Other streaming platforms

For me, the BBC iPlayer didn’t do well with the dedicated streaming server. However, switching to the regular one helped. Therefore, if you’re having trouble unblocking Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, or Hulu, try switching between the server types.

Once again, the VPN Unlimited browser extension should be enough for watching movies and TV shows. However, that means you won’t be able to turn on the WireGuard protocol, which may give you better performance and higher video quality.

VPN Unlimited for Kodi

KeepSolid VPN doesn’t have a Kodi add-on, but it can be configured to work. In any case, I can’t recommend installing it on Kodi.

While this service is fast enough for you to stream in the best video quality (thanks, WireGuard), the problem arises when we talk about privacy.

Most Kodi users know that a lot of the available content is copyrighted, which means that accessing it is illegal and can lead to legal troubles. As I mentioned above in my review, this provider keeps logs and is based in the United States, a Five Eyes country. Therefore, you should rather choose from the best Kodi VPNs instead.

Amazon Fire TV and Fire Stick

VPN Unlimited has an app for Amazon Fire TV and Fire Stick. Alternatively, you can protect your device by installing this VPN on your router. There’s also a third option to use Smart DNS, but sadly, KeepSolid charges extra for enabling this feature.

The speeds should be fast enough to stream most of the content in HD or 4K, provided that your internet connection is good. This VPN is also good at unblocking various content platforms. It even has dedicated servers for Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and others.

Is VPN Unlimited good for gaming and Twitch?

VPN Unlimited is a good choice for gamers and Twitch users. To start with, it offers low ping servers and the fastest WireGuard protocol. Furthermore it has a stealth protocol that can help if you’re in China or another country with restricted internet access.

Finally, using a VPN helps avoid bandwidth throttling. Many ISPs like to limit the connection speed, especially if they see that you’re sending or receiving lots of data. With KeepSolid VPN, they won’t be able to tell what you’re doing online and won’t have any grounds for reducing bandwidth.

Is VPN Unlimited good for torrenting?

It is decent for torrenting. The service allows for P2P traffic, which is a good start.

While P2P activities aren’t available on all servers, there are some designated options. However, the locations are in North America and Europe, so users from other regions might experience slowdowns. On the other hand, VPN Unlimited has shown that its speeds can be very fast with the WireGuard protocol.

I also experienced some connection drops – something that other users also mentioned earlier. In light of this, you should make sure you have your kill switch on at all times not to risk leaking while torrenting.

There’s also no free SOCKS5 proxy, which makes this service a bit less flexible.

Can VPN Unlimited bypass the Great Firewall of China?

This service is well-equipped for use in China and other censorship-heavy countries. Save for the P2P, the rest of the server list is sufficiently dispersed for good performance almost anywhere. Additionally, VPN Unlimited is secure enough unless you belong to a particularly sensitive user group, such as political activists or journalists.

China and some other repressive states rely on Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) to block VPN traffic (particularly OpenVPN). VPN Unlimited offers the KeepSolid Wise protocol to bypass this advanced measure, which disguises VPN traffic as something benign. This makes it a reliable service for climbing the Great Firewall.

VPN Unlimited not connecting?

VPN Unlimited not connecting is an issue that many people worldwide are probably going to come across at some point. While “turn it off and back on again” might be enough, there’s every chance that you might still be suffering from connectivity issues.

VPN Unlimited is an above-average VPN service that offers some good security features. It’s also fast, thanks to the WireGuard tunneling protocol. Unfortunately, using it on macOS and iOS devices means you won’t have the kill switch, which only works on IKEv2.

This VPN is good for streaming and gaming, but it’s not the best in any of these areas. KeepSolid VPN supports torrenting if you use dedicated servers. Sadly, all of them are in North America and Europe.

The biggest issue with VPN Unlimited is its privacy policy, which stands out as a bad example on the top end of the VPN market. Not bothered? Well, this tool might just be for you!
