VPNinja offers most of the features of a top VPN for a very low price, provided you don’t care about your privacy.

It is clear after taking a brief look at VPNinja’s website that this is a VPN built on a budget. We’re missing some crucial features and on top of that it operates from China, which disqualifies it right off the bat if you’d rather the Chinese government didn’t know everything about you.

Security and privacy

VPNinja has decent cryptography, but a lot of the features that you will find in other VPNs of similar price range are not present. Furthermore, their website is vague about a lot of the details.

Currently, VPNinja has the following security features:

• OpenVPN, L2TP/IPSec, PPTP security protocols
• A stealth protocol (unclear as to why, considering that no VPN can operate out of China
• without cooperating with authorities)
• DNS Leak Protection
• 256-bit encryption

The lack of a kill switch is a big no-no for a VPN aimed at anonymity because there’s always the risk your identity will leak due to a dropped VPN connection. On top of this, the lack of any additional features such as multi-hop is also quite apparent, although we did not expect these considering VPNinja’s price range.

Does VPNinja keep logs?

In a word, yes. One of the things that we did not like about VPNinja is the fact that their Privacy Policy is all smoke and mirrors. All of it is extremely vague and there is no way to find out exactly what the provider is storing when we use their service. It’s fair to assume that a Chinese VPN service logs basically everything.

Speed and performance

Performance is decent. We noticed minimal loss, making this VPN good for streaming and other speed-intensive activities. What’s even better is that the speed was fairly consistent across all servers (of course, servers which are farther away are bound to be a little bit slower).

The service has a total of 34 servers spread across 14 different locations. The locations are spread out evenly across the world and you should not have that much trouble finding a server near you.

Ease of use and multiplatform support

You can download VPNinja client on a plethora of different devices. It is incredibly easy to use and there are numerous guides available on how to download its app and install it on the website.

That is not all, as the service also allows you to use OpenVPN configurations to install it on any device that may support them. This process is somewhat complicated, but the good news is that it is possible for you to set up VPNinja on any other device such as Kindle Firestick.

It is easy to use across all the platforms. The clients are intuitive and the website has adequate resources for troubleshooting.

Unblocking Netflix and other streaming platforms

You can use VPNinja to move past geo-blocking and access most of your favorite tv shows across Netflix, Hulu, and BBC iPlayer. However, we did find that it failed to access Amazon Prime Video.

For Netflix, you can access it through their Hong Kong and South Korean servers (if you’re based in Asia). The US version of Netflix can also be accessed.

The addition of the OpenVPN configuration means that you will be able to unblock Netflix on devices such as Roku and Nvidia Shield TV as well, making this a good VPN for streaming (but not perfect by any means).

P2P and torrenting

If you are someone who likes to torrent a lot, then you must be careful of getting copyright infringement notices. The best way to make sure that no one can find out about you is by using an encrypted VPN which allows torrenting (many VPNs do not).

Torrent downloads are possible as VPNinja allows you to establish a P2P connection. However, you can only use the Canadian server for secure torrenting and there is no SOCKS5 proxy and nor a kill switch to make sure you stay anonymous.

Online censorship in China and elsewhere

VPNinja works incredibly well in China and that’s why you should absolutely not use it. China-operated VPN services do so by following government requirements. In other words, the authorities basically have access to all your data.

Even if this weren’t the case, VPNinja is probably not secure enough for you to be using it in China. The lack of a kill switch means you could easily blow your cover.

Customer support

There aren’t many support options. Basically, you will have to rely on:

There is no option of phone or live support. However, the self-help resources are quite detailed and there are guides on how to set up the VPN on pretty much every single device as well as other tips that you may want to know.

Pricing

Many VPNs of this size offer free trials, and you can access VPNinja for a total of 4 hours before you need to purchase it. Their refund policy states that you also have a money-back guarantee for any reason for 3 days after your purchase.

There are a total of 3 pricing plans on offer by VPNinja, which are:

• 1-week plan: $12.00/month
• 1-month plan: $6.00/month
• 12-month plan: $4.83/month

The prices are fairly low, but no price is low enough to forego privacy.

Bottom line

VPNinja is by no means a good VPN when it comes to security or privacy. Even disregarding the fact that it operates out of China, you can get far better security features for the same price elsewhere. The only purpose this tool is decent for is moving around geo-blocking.
