Best VPN for Austria in 2024

Best VPN for Austria

Besides confusion with Australia, Austria is known for its location in the Alps, delicious variations of strudel, and bodybuilder-turned-US-governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. On the other hand, Austrians are more likely interested in geo-restricted local content (TV channels, movies, online publications) while traveling abroad.

You can easily achieve that (and more) with a Virtual Private Network (VPN) for Austria. It’s a tool that redirects your connection through remote locations while masking the details about your whereabouts and identity. It allows you to pick almost any country and gain a foreign IP address to circumvent regional restrictions.

Why do you need a VPN for Austria?

All countries have to deal with what is known as geo-blocking. It’s the practice of restricting certain content (websites, movies, TV shows, etc.) to specific regions. Online services enforce these limitations primarily by checking visitor IP addresses. If the IP is from an approved country, the user can freely access the website. If not, they’re greeted with an unfavorable message about restrictions.

A great way to overcome this issue is using one of the best VPN services available. These programs change your IP address by rerouting your connection through servers in countries of your choice. Additionally, your online activities are completely hidden with the help of AES-256 encryption.

While the process sounds simple, it has a lot of potential. For example, a VPN For Austria will have servers in multiple countries, including overseas regions. This allows you to get a US IP address and unlock exclusive movies and TV shows on services like Netflix. Alternatively, you’ll be able to access Austrian content while traveling elsewhere.

A VPN tunnel also grants bonus security and makes you invulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks. You’ll also enjoy complete anonymity from your internet service provider and other unwelcome onlookers. Meanwhile, the most secure VPNs can block malicious ads, online trackers, and malware.

Proton VPN is the perfect option for users with exceptional privacy needs. The Swiss-based provider offers servers in Austria and numerous other countries without skipping a beat in connection performance. However, its airtight confidentiality comes with a hefty $3.59/month price tag.

From a numbers perspective, Proton VPN operates 9200+ servers across 110+ countries. The network contains regular and Secure Core (Multi-hop) servers for enhanced security. Furthermore, blazing-fast connections are conducted with the modern and open-source WireGuard protocol. The technology is further improved with the inclusion of the proprietary VPN Accelerator.

Confidentiality is guaranteed because of the trifecta of Swiss jurisdiction, independent audits, and open-source software. You can also reap these privacy benefits by combining Proton VPN with other digital services, such as Proton Mail, Proton Drive, and Proton Calendar.

Subscription-wary users can start with the Proton VPN free plan. Unsurprisingly, it comes with certain limitations, such as fewer server locations, slower connection speeds, and a lack of P2P support.

How we picked the best VPN for Austria

Coming up with our selection of VPNs for Austria required a two-step process. First, we had to pick an initial batch of providers that fit our criteria. After that, we conducted manual tests to ensure their performance was up to standard. Below is an overview of the initial criteria we considered vital.

  • Servers in Austria. As the name suggests, a VPN for Austria must have some servers in the country. They’ll allow you to access geo-blocked Austrian content abroad or have digital anonymity in Austria with minimal connection speed loss.
  • Connection speed. Unwavering connection speeds guarantee an excellent experience no matter what your goals are. As such, we paid special attention to the tunneling protocols of VPNs, what speeds they can facilitate, and how they fare on our VPN speed test.
  • Security and privacy features. Reliable digital security features are essential to get around geographical restrictions and keep you completely anonymous. Even non-critical bonuses like ad and tracker blocking can prove beneficial in certain situations.
  • Subscription price. Some could argue that the security and privacy perks of a VPN are vital in this day and age. If that’s the case, the service shouldn’t cost a fortune. Therefore, we picked providers with affordable prices, free trials, and generous money-back guarantee periods.
  • Device compatibility. A premium VPN should be compatible with every device you own for maximum security and convenience. If it lacks apps for a particular system, it should at least provide router firmware as a backup option.
  • Customer support options. On rare occasions, VPNs can encounter issues that users cannot resolve themselves. Therefore, it’s crucial to have customer support specialists available at all times.

Austria VPN not working: potential fixes

Virtual private network users should be familiar with the most common problems and their solutions while using the software. Please note that these issues commonly occur while trying to get around geographical restrictions. After all, some websites try to limit the efficacy of VPNs by blocking IP addresses or VPN traffic.

Here’s what you can try if a simple app restart doesn’t help.

  • Check for IP and DNS leaks. Perhaps your IP address didn’t change, or some information is leaking through, thus undermining your efforts to change your location. You can check for leakage on websites like dnsleaktest.com
  • Switch to another server. You won’t know for certain if a particular IP address is blocked. However, that’s a fair conclusion if there are no leaks, but you still can’t access geo-blocked content. Thankfully, you can get a new IP by connecting to another server.
  • Update your VPN software. You’ll have the greatest chances of curbing restrictions with up-to-date software. Ensure your VPN app isn’t waiting for any important updates.
  • Enable Stealth VPN. Some networks block all VPN traffic to prevent users from getting around geographical restrictions. Thankfully, the most secure VPNs offer tools for masking VPN traffic and bypassing such limitations.
  • Use a browser extension. You can try a different approach to the issue if you’re using a VPN with browser extensions.

What you can watch with a VPN for Austria

When it comes to streaming, a VPN can provide a twofold advantage. Firstly, it can unblock foreign TV content on streaming services you already own. For example, connecting to USA servers will change your Netflix region and unlock exclusive American movies and TV shows.

Netflix with NordVPN Austrian servers

On the other hand, you can use an Austrian VPN to watch your favorite shows in your native language while traveling elsewhere. To be precise, Netflix in America doesn’t always offer content with German subtitles or audio. Thankfully, connecting to a server in Austria or Germany can unlock these perks.

Finally, you can use a virtual private network to watch online Austrian television anywhere. Supported channels include:

  • ATV
  • ORF 1
  • Puls 4
  • Servus TV
  • Kanal Telemedial
  • Melodie Express

Ultimately, if your goal is access to foreign video content, sign up for a well-performing VPN for streaming.

Can you find the best free VPN for Austria?

Many digital products have zero-cost alternatives, and VPNs are no exception to this rule. However, the best free VPN for Austria will severely disappoint you because costless VPNs have countless issues, such as:

  • Miniscule server networks without Austrian locations
  • Monthly data caps
  • Throttled connection speeds
  • Absence of security features
  • Inability to stream geo-blocked content

If that wasn’t enough, some free VPNs are quite heinous and operate by collecting excess user data and selling it to advertisers. So, if you want to avoid issues regarding personal information, only consider premium VPNs.

On the other hand, there are a few reliable free VPN services if you don’t mind the previously mentioned downsides. Furthermore, some of our recommended providers offer a free trial period if you want a costless test run. You’ll find more details in our dedicated free trial VPNs article. Ultimately, you’ll have the least headaches by investing in a premium VPN for Austria, such as NordVPN.

I’ve heard of Ivacy, I didn’t know it was a good VPN, I think I’ll take a look closer at this one. NordVPN sounds really good as well, I guess I’ll read your reviews and see which one is the best ! Thanks for the article.

While I haven’t yet tested ExpressVPN I have found Proton VPN to work well in Austria. The speed is always very high and I’ve never experienced any bad thing with this. NordVPN also looks very nice because it’s one of the best from what I’ve seen and it has a very competitive price.

Currently ExpressVPN and VyprVPN are unable to live stream ORF. VyprVPN has never worked in my experience, however, ExpressVPN was working up until mid December 2018 but then stopped.

I highly recommend Express VPN no matter where you are in the world! Living in Austria might be an online security dream, but hacks exist everywhere and you can never be too safe online.
